General Text format automatically get changed to DATE

I am using Excel (Office 2007). While working on a workbook everything is ok
however when I try to reopen it after saving all the data stored in General
gets chaged to Date type automatically.

Please help me undestand why this is happening? I have already loaded 2007
again as I thaught may be Excel got corrupted but still the issue remains the
same.

Hi Simon,
Thanks for your conceran.

For example if I maintain count of responses received under category Good,
Average & Poor and enter no. of counts in it (2,3,5) after saving the file
and reopening the same automatically the cells are set to DATE format and
instead of numbers it gives me date.

I hope am able to elaborate my query now.
