First of all, I just need to say the FX 5200 is crap.
Ok, got that out of my system. (not really crap if you
just surf the web/check e-mail/do wordprocessing/etc.)
I know my 5200 didn't have a DVI connection (not sure if
they made one with DVI or not) and an old packard bell
monitor shouldn't have a DVI connector. So that's out of
the way.
I see your drivers are up to date, the 56.72's. That's
good. DirectX 9.0b?
One issue I've seen that's not video card related, was a
person that had a power strip sitting close to his
monitor. At certain frequencies, the monitor would appear
to flicker do to the disruption from the power strip.
Check that out. Make sure nothing electrical is sitting
very close to your monitor. If something is, unplug it
and move it out of the way to see if it continues.
Why it would be fine in games and not your desktop is a
bit confusing. Maybe you're playing games that make the
distortion too hard to notice?
Make sure the thing is plugged into your AGP slot all the
way, not loose or some sticking out. Check the connector
for your monitor to make sure no pins are bent, etc.
Not sure what to tell you. I had a FX5200 once. It was ok
for a while, but then I grew tired of messing with it. I
spent the extra money on an ATI RADEON 9800 Pro. I loved
the ATI so much, I took my FX5200 out into the middle of
the driveway, and ran over it a few times with my car. It
was fun. It was soothing.
Have a nice day!

Can someone please help me! I just installed a fresh
Windows XP and installed a new GeForce FX 5200 agp
graphics card. My monitor constantly flickers and
sometimes restarts unexpectidly. I have tried adjusting
the monitors refresh rate, but it doesnt work. I have
herd that you cannot change the default Windows XP
refresh rate. It stays at 60hz. The wierd part is when i
play games or have stuff in full screen mode, the display
isnt garbled or flickering. It only flickers when its
running normally on the desktop or on the internet. Any
information would help. Thanks, Josh
