Game Display Problems

Hi, I have a problem displaying all my games correctly. Each game that I
start (and it could be an old dos game like arkanoid or cd man or a new
one like The Sims) doesn't start full screen. It is a full screen mode,
but around the actual game, there is a black space. It varies from game
to game--e.g. with The Sims or the old dos games its a square in the
middle of the screen and then there is about 8 cm of just black. With
Pharaoh, there are only black stripes on the sides, not on the top or
the bottom. All the games run okay, it's just that they run in a
smaller portion of the screen. I don't know what to do about it because
it is really irritating.
I have a widescreen display - 1280 by 800 px resolution, Compaq
Presario 3320 Pentium 4 3GHz, NVIDIA 9000. I also recently installed
DOS Box but then uninstalled it - I don't know if there is any
connection or not. Thanks so much for the help!!!

That because you are using a "non-standard" monitor as far as those
games are concerned any resolution outside a 3:4 doesn't exist. You can
stretch the monitor to make the 3:4 size fill the screen if the
distortion bothers you less than the black stripes.
