Gallery Problems in FP 2002

I have seen my problem adressed many time, but never resolved
I am designing a page online. I design directly onto the site. . . onto the server. I do not "publish" the site, I just save the pages. I tried making a photo gallery and everything works until I save the page
Instead of the gallery displaying, it shows this: "[../photogallery/photo899/real.htm]"
I thought "publishing" the site would fix this, but when I try 2 publish it I get "Please enter a publish destination that is differnt from the current open web"
Can SOMEONE help me

yah, you can't publish to itself.
create your gallery on your local machine then publish it to the server.

Just a note here. I ALWAYS design/modify/update my site on my local machine and then publish to the site. For one thing, you will always have at least 1 backup that way. In the event I need to correct something online post haste, I sync the site with my computer shortly thereafter.

OK. I tried that and when I viewed the new page in my browser I got
"[file:///H:/My Documents/My Webs/thankmymomma/photogallery/photo10192/real.htm]
which is essentially the same thing I got when I saved it directly in my website. Only thing, now it shows the location on my hard drive when before it showed the location on my server
Do you know what is wrong

You're not doing anything wrong, yet.

The gallery url will show relative to your machine (file://H:whatever) UNTIL you PUBLISH to your http://www.yourwebsite.com . FP will convert the address correctly if your host has FP SE installed and they are working ok.

One word of caution with FP's galleries; don't mess with the aribtrary name it gives them (in your case below photo10192) and don't relocated the files either. Ok, that was more than one word of caution...there are more too :)

OK, but that is what I am saying
I DID publish it 2 my website and it DID display the location on my hard drive
I made the page and gallery in the My Webs folder and then published it 2 my website . .
What happened

?

ok lets backup a sec.

You're using FP's Photogallery:

IMPORT all the photos you want to use into FP first (whatever image folder you want to use within FP).

Then create your Photogallery within FP. - it will create it's own silly file names etc.
Save
Ok.. now do a Recalculate Hyperlinks.
Then Re-Publish to your host server.

(you may want to delete the previously created photogallery off the server first)

See what happens.

Let us know.

hth.

Incorrect
FP should never show a link in a saved page in a FP site as file://H:whatever
- if it does it's to a file external to the web or the link is broken
- it should only show relative links if all pages are in your site

I tried that . . . didn't work
So, is it IMPOSSIBLE to create a gallery if I work directly on the server
I am very frustrated now
Does ANYONE have a solution

In one of your previous posts you said you Saved it to your online website. You should be Publishing it from your local machine's web to your host server. I've never tried creating one online - one of the guru's will have to answer that for you. My gut feeling is that you can't do it while online.

Why are you working directly anyway?

But, there may be other alternatives, I just don't know what they are since I always develop stuff offline then publish it up to the server.

Shouldn't be a problem to create a site (or photo gallery) directly on the remote server, as long as
all content is created or imported in the current open web prior to using or linking to the image or
document, etc.

The major issue is that once the site starts having traffic, visitors will see any changes as they
are made and saved. Changes to the site's navigation structure can cause confusion to visitors that
are currently navigating the site, etc.
