We are running a single Windows 2000 SP4 DC with DHCP, DNS and WINS on it.
All workstations are running Windows XP SP2.
I am having an issue where about half of our workstations show the wrong
full computer name. Under My Computer/Properties/Computer Name, the full
computer name is listed as computer.wrongdomain.com. However, if I click on
Change then More..., the primary DNS suffix is listed correctly
(rightdomain.com). Making any changes to the Primary DNS Suffix doesn't
modify the full computer name. Obviously this is causing issues with DNS
registration (the workstation tries to register as computer.wrongdomain.com
but since the DC only handles rightdomain.com, DNS registration fails).
Searching Google, I found the following article:

I followed the instructions it gives but they made no difference.
Short of manually editing the registry or removing and re-adding the
workstations to the domain, how can I correct the full computer name?
Second, does anyone have any idea on how the full computer name got set
incorrectly in the first place? These workstations were all clean installs at
one time so the only source of the full computer name is either DHCP or
Active Directory. However, I have not been able to find any trace of
wrongdomain.com in either, although I am a novice when it comes to AD
troubleshooting.
I would appreciate any insight you may be able to provide.
