FTP Problems

This may not be Windows-related at all, I am just hoping somebody else
may have run into the same thing.

For the last several weeks, I haven't been able to FTP. When I try to
connect to several (but not all) FTP sites, I am able to log in OK but
when it tries to read the remote directory it just hangs forever.

I do have anti-virus software, McAffee, but when I turn off on-access
virus scanning I still have the same problem, so I don't -think- that
is the problem. (It was my first guess)

Has anyone run into the same thing?

On the BBS for one of the services I am trying to FTP into somebody
else posted having the same problem, and only fairly recently, so I am
wondering if this might be related either to a Windows update on the
client side or to Microsoft's FTP server software on the server side.

Thanks for any help, sorry this might not be Windows-related at all.

If you are behind a firewall, you may need to turn on "Passive Mode"
(aka PASV) - for Internet Explorer, this is done under the Advanced tab of
Internet Options or Properties.
For the Win2000 commandline FTP program, I don't think that there is a way to
turn on this mode - you may need to use a third-party program (ncftp is one
of many).

Great, that did it. Thanks very much.
