hi guys,
i am Mohit 26yr male from India/New Delhi.I am having a peculiar
problem in Dell laptop which i have although its not hardware related but
its related to FTP. For example if i type ftp ftp.microsoft.com the
connection opens but closes also immediately in a second. why so?? i am not
able to FTP to any ftp server, the connection opens and closes in just one
second.
Now let me tell you about something about my network.
I have two PC's, one is a Desktop and second one is a Laptop. The Desktop is
connected to a DSL modem and that acts as a gateway, running Winxp
Professional and has a static IP address.I have made my DSL modem connection
as ICS, which
is issuing my laptop c class ip addresses between 192.168.0.2 -
192.168.0.254 on weekly basis.
Now i am able to surf on laptop and all services are working good except
FTP.
By the way both machines can see each other on network places.and the
workgroup is MSHOME.NET

1)On the Desktop when i type FTP ftp.microsoft.com in the dos window there i
get error
like "ftp:connect error unknown error number
ftp:connect"
So i am not able to connect to any ftp server so a straight no on my Desktop
PC for FTP. there is no point of connecting to any ftp server when the
command itself gives me an error like this connecting to ftp server is
second issue.

2)but the good thing is i am able to connect to FTP servers from my
Laptop. But i am not able to use PASV transfer from Laptop using WS_FTP LE
version.

thanks
I hope i will get some solution.

I will start off by saying that I am not sure whether this will work but it
is worth a try in an effort to fix your problem.
Open Internet Explorer, then click "Tools", then "Internet Options", then
"Advanced". Scroll down AND checkmark the boxes beside these two:
1. Enable folder view for FTP sites.
2. Use passive FTP (for firewall and DSL Modem compatibility).
I am not sure about the affect of the first one (A) but look at the second!
You are using a DSL Modem certainly and very probably either a hardware or
software firewall, maybe both. Unless someone else give you a better answer
or both are already checkmarked, give this a try and report the results so
we can all learn a little more.
