FTP error.. is this an XP problem??

hi all,

I've a friend who's having trouble connecting to anything via FTP, has
tried several programs, and is getting the following error.

Error 451Transfer aborted Broken Pipe
Connection Closed

Her setup is correct, and all other functions are working on her
computer, she can get online, get and send email, etc. but the FTP
won't work. We maintain a website together and she has been having
this challenge for a few weeks now.. it's starting to get serious..
;-)

Is this something possibly with XP?? She is running XP Pro I think

Hi,

Has she tried unchecking "Use passive FTP..." on the advanced tab of
Internet Options in the Control Panel?

Hi,

Has she tried unchecking "Use passive FTP..." on the advanced tab of
Internet Options in the Control Panel?

it's not checked in the FTP program but don't know about in IE
Options.. would that affect a third party program?

ok, I'll have her uncheck it, but that option is checked on mine and
it works fine with WS_FTP Pro 8. ???

further info, she says it connects okay, but will not display the
list of files and folders on the remote machine... I told her to try
some other sites, and haven't heard back yet.. if it's consistent with
all sites, any ideas what could be causing this, it used to work just
fine for her...

thanks,

Hi Stumped,

I'm very glad to see the initial issue has been resolved by unchecking "Use
passive FTP..." on the advanced tab of Internet Options in the Control
Panel.

About the issue that cannot display the list of files and folders on the
remote machine, I want to know if there is any error information when it
tries to display the list of files and folders on the remote machine. And
if she can give a screen shot is the best and you can send here or send to
me at (e-mail address removed).

To take a screen shot
---------------------
a. Press the Pr Scrn key once on the keyboard when the error message
appears.
b. Click Start, go to Run, enter MSPAINT in the open dialog box, and then
Click OK.
c. Use Ctrl + V to paste the screenshot to the canvas.
d. From the File menu, go to Save and save it as a JPG file.
e. Send the JPG file to me as an attachment.

Meanwhile, check the other sites to check the issue. Please feel free to
let us know the result at your earliest convenience. We are very glad to
help you.

Thanks & Regards

Hi Amanda,

we got it working... she never actually changed that Internet
setting, but we discovered that she had inadvertantly unchecked "use
passive mode" in the options of the ws_ftp program, and after
rechecking it, all is working as before... ;-)

It did work okay on some other sites, so I'm guessing the target site
was the one that required passive mode be turned on... ??

At any rate all is working now...

thanks for responding,

niteowl
