Frontpage shuts down during editing ?????

K

Ken N

I cannot figure this out. There are certain spots on my page (like a
paragraph of text) that, when I attempt to change in any way, the program
just stops. Frontpage vanishes and I am left at my desk top. Nothing is saved
and I have to restart frontpage.

This happens when I place the cursor in the affected area of the page. As
soon as I click the mouse button to place the cursor, the program just shuts
off.

The only remedy I have arrived at is to build another page and move what I
can to it then delete the affected page. But after some time, the problem
"follows" me and re-appears on the page again.

Anybody else experiance this? What is going on?

Any help would be greatly appreiciated.

I have heard of a similar problem where an external style sheet tried to
load itself using an @import statement. The editor would die whenever the
cursor was placed anywhere in design view. But this happened every time,
not after a period of editing, or at a specific point in the page.

Please upload the errant page together with all associated files (CSS,
images, JavaScript) and post a link to it here. Also indicate where in the
page the problem arises.

Thank you for your reply Ronx.

The page in question is in use on my website. That is; it is uploaded
already and visible on the net. Should I just give the URL to that page and
indicate where the "affected" area is?

Here is the URL of the page in question.

http://germanhelmetsinc.com/helmets.htm

The affected area is in the description of Item #508 which is between 1/2
and 3/4 of the way down the page.

I'll have to warn you in advance that you are going to see some weird stuff
on this "for sale" page. I hope it doesn't prove to be offensive.

Also, as of this morning, the problem has "leaked" into another page on the
same site.

Thanks in advance for any insight you can offer.

I was able to edit all parts of the page in FrontPage 2003 and expression
Web - though changing anything was very sluggish.

By removing most of lines (around 2000 lines removed) similar to:
<font id="role_document57670" face="Trebuchet MS">
and
<font id="rolex_document57670" face="Trebuchet MS">
(the number after document varies) plus the associated </font> tags, and
then using (in code view) right-click->Reformat HTML
the page is reduced from 8202 lines of HTML to 151 lines. There is then no
problem at all editing in Expression Web or FrontPage 2003, and no visible
change to the page.

Some of these tags are relevant since they do something to the text that
follows, but most (90% or more) are there doing nothing. The ids in the font
tags reminds me of the rubbish Word produces when converting a document
containing a Table of contents to HTML pages.

I suspect that these tags are the cause of problems in other pages.

FYI, when using CSS such as
<p align="center" style="margin-left: 75; margin-right: 75">
the dimension needs units if you want it to work in Firefox or any browser
other than IE.
This snippet should be
<p align="center" style="margin-left: 75px; margin-right: 75px">

Hello Ronx

Thank you for taking a look at this for me. I must admit that most of
what you say goes completely over my head as I am computer literate only on
the most rudimentary scale. I know nothing about writing in HTML codes;
Frontpage has always done that for me.

I am still using my copy of Frontpage 2000 which I bought way back when.
Perhaps if I find a copy of Frontpage 2003 I may have better luck with this.

I have heard that "Visions" requires a lot more compter know-how in order
to use correctly. I am going to have to avoid that one if possible.

Thanks again.

I never heard of "Visions" so cannot comment.

Go to http://www.w3schools.com and work through the tutorials on HTML and
CSS. Changing to FrontPage 2003 will not help since solving your problem is
a simple word processing exercise- deleting unused code. That means you
have to understand HTML.

FrontPage 2003 is available at some places, but at extortionate prices (I
have seen $299 - double the original retail price). Expression Web is
available as a free 60 day trial from
http://expression.microsoft.com , and can be purchased at an upgrade price
(since you have FrontPage) of around $89 or less.
