FrontPage - or what?

W

Walter R.

I have been using FP for the last 8 years and I am sorry to see its demise.
What might I use instead of FP? Expressions Web is not ready. What are
other good and easy to master web design programs? Is Dreamweaver a good
alternative?

Thanks for any input.

Right, but it seems that webhosts are already discontinuing their support
for the FP extensions. Then what do I do?

Dreamweaver is not only quite expensive and the learning curve is very
steep. It IS excellent however if you're a professional web developer.
Move to Expressions as soon as you can.

Don't you mean that it has a shallow learning curve? If something has
a steep learning curve, that would indicate that a lot of learning
takes place over a small period of time. ;)

If you moved to Dreamweaver you would be in the same postion.

FrontPage uses FTP .. either within it or you can use a third party (same
with dw)

check out Expression Web it's pretty awesome.

I've always thought that 'steep' in this sort of case meant 'difficult'!
Dreamweaver is not easy to learn... but does provide for many more
capabilities that FrontPage did. I understand that Expressions is much more
like Dreamweaver now. I wonder if it will get the 3rd party support that
Dreamweaver has and FP never had.

I have not tried it since the last older version, but I have heard comments
that the current version of DW is pretty bloated.

But I can't really think of much that DW can do that FP could not do. The
biggest problem I had with FP is that it made it far too easy to write
really bad code, and some of the bots/includes were pretty horrible.

I think of a steep hill as difficult to climb, a steep learning curve
(as in / )means a short and easy path: you can absorb a lot of info
quickly since the material is not too difficult.

A shallow learning curve means it takes a long time and the material
must be absorbed slowly, at least to me.

Could you please let us know what these capabilities are that Dreamweaver
apparently has...that you feel FrontPage doesn't have? Just curious as I no
longer use Dreamweaver at all.

There are probably a lot of folks that have done 3rd party additions for
FrontPage that will be very surprised to hear this. There are also quite a
few statements out there both from The Dreamweaver community as well as the
FrontPage community that based on what they have seen with the Expression
beta..that not only is Expression catching up to Deamweaver (whatever that
means) but in many cases Dreamweaver users may very well be using Expression
either with Dreamweaver..or by itself.
