People need to be reminded that they can help themselves and should try
doing that first.
"Import files first" is the answer that many NEED to get their images
working correctly, so it is often a very valid answer.
Have you read all the tutorials that I have written specifically to help
people in this newsgroup? I didn't have to do that!! I did it because there
was/is a need for the information ... more than can be included in a
newsgroup response.
I happen to use Dreamweaver most of the time now, but have continued to come
here to be helpful. What do you do to contribute?
http://www.eleanorstravels.com/suggestedresources.htm
If you don't like my answers please don't read them. Choose "Block Sender"
Many, many people have e-mailed me personally to thank me for the help I
have given them....much more help than is reflected in this newsgroup.
Here's a comment I received just this morning: " I am very grateful for your
ver instructive website to teach novices like myself how to construct
photogallery."
Snooty, Grumpy, repetitive Eleanor

Joe Bigelow

I frankly don't understand your attitude in this group. You rarely
contribute anything worthwhile and your remarks are snooty and repetitive.
Nobody is holding a gun to your head. If you don't know the answer or don't
want to reply, then by all means, don't. "Press F1" and "Import files first"
is getting quite old now. Why this compulsion to react when you don't know
the answer or don't want to answer?

Good Gawd!! What an attitude!!!

Joe and Eleanor,
Wow, Joe, quite a diatribe there. Boiling this down to its very basics, Eleanor
has never sunk to making personal attacks on people. And in making personal
attacks and name-calling you really show yourself to be the very person that you
claim Eleanor is (in so many words.) So you have failed yourself in that
regard. Secondly who made you "newsgroup cop?" Are you the protector for all
the pitiful and downtrodden newsgroup users? Eleanor has NEVER claimed to be
Jim Buyens, and she's smart enough to know to never claim to be someone she
isn't. But YOU claim to know exactly who she is and YOU know very little about
her.
I mean what is this exactly Joe:

......(And please
don't teach me how to block a person in my mail program. I've been using
computers and Internet while you were still baking cookies for your
grandkids and the only computer you had touched till then was your blood
pressure monitoring machine.)....

Have you been to Eleanor's house to see her baking cookies, hooked up to a blood
pressure machine? See, it's attacks like that which place you in the great
pantheon of people who lower themselves to very level of which they are
condemning. Do you not understand how YOU made YOURSELF look in this post you
tendered? What qualifies you to come in here and be the newsgroup cop? I
suspect absolutely nothing. How do you act when you're not hiding behind a
computer screen Joe?

PART 2.

Hang tight Joe, I'm not letting Eleanor off either.

Now Eleanor..... :) ....... have you ever seen the Saturday Night Live skit
about "Your Company's Computer Guy"??? MANY and I mean MANY! computer people
tend to turn into this guy. We get to that point where things are absolutely
second nature to us, and have moved on to some really seriously complex stuff.
So when somebody asks a really trivial question that has been answered 74 times
already in the past 10 days, we tend to pounce on them a little bit. You have
been guilty, I have been guilty, the MVP's God bless'em are guilty alot. But I
know their frustration.

One of the points Joe makes is valid - to a degree - that in being short with
people in your replies, you tend to appear as though YOU want to appear as a
big-time expert and contributor in the eyes of other big-time experts and
contributors. Do you see what I'm saying? It makes you appear as though you
have self-declared Eleanor as being near the top of the FP user pyramid. But in
my opinion, if you are near the top, it then becomes even MORE a responsibility
to seriously be compassionate in/with your help. I really believe that.

Let me offer a practical observation: When I have a question, the very first
thing I do is to go to Google Groups and look it up there. For you and me, and
probably Joe, that is now obvious and second nature. I have my OEx set to
download 210 new posts each time. Well, even including old read posts, you're
only going to have about 5 or 6 days worth of the group inside your newsreader
anyway in a really active group. So even if a question gets answered pretty
often it may not be in the newsreader still. Stay with me here.... so that
means searching in Outlook Ex for an answer is useless to me. I have to go to
Google. Well, Eleanor, MANY newbies have NO IDEA that they can search Google
for archives. I am constantly telling people that that exists.

So it may well be that instead of being the expert who sort of wants to sound
like the expert, a more compassionate way to respond to alot of these
over-and-over questions, is to start continually mentioning "hey, head over to
http://groups.google.com and do a search there. Sometimes I'll even do the
search for them, and then post the resulting URL here in the NG for the person.

All of this has to do with being compassionate in your help, above and beyond
helpful. And as a member near the top of the heap, that is (in my opinion) your
responsibility.

Joe, chill out, apologize to Eleanor so we can all be happy again. You made
some very valid and important points, but the personal stuff, I hope you'll be
big enough to take back.

Eleanor, you're a good woman. Allow Joe his foibles. Try to be genuine and
compassionate in your help.

Love to you both...

Tim

High Tide Internet

Yes, while I have seen your tutorials and appreciate your trying to help
novices who don't know how to properly put images on their web, it does not
exactly make you Jim Buyens. Also, to tell people that you have to start
over every time your photogallery messes up, does not make you an expert in
FrontPage. To tell people that there is no way to prevent someone from
stealing your pictures from the Web also does not qualify you to write a
Special Edition book on FrontPage. To jump every time someone asks about
no-right-click to say that the effort is both futile and puerile may make
you look like an HTML guru in front of newbies, it still does not qualify
you to become a FrontPage MVP.

I have no problem with you trying to help new-comers, that's the spirit of
these newsgroups. It's your "mother-in-law'ish" attitude that irks me. You
scold new-comers like they have sinned by asking a question. (And please
don't teach me how to block a person in my mail program. I've been using
computers and Internet while you were still baking cookies for your
grandkids and the only computer you had touched till then was your blood
pressure monitoring machine.). Have you ever thought that many new FP users
may not even be familiar with proper terminology to even look it up under
Help screen? And even if they asked a simple or repetitive question like
right-click, you don't have to attack them by making them look like an
idiot. Do you realize that it may be the first ever trip to a newsgroup for
this person and hence he/she doesn't know how to do a search or is not
familiar with the newsgroup etiquettes?

I also resent your chauvinistic attitude towards FrontPage in contrast to
Dreamweaver that I have noticed over a period of last few months. For your
information I, and I suspect there are many other people like me in this
newsgroup, also use and hang out in Dreamweaver, Fireworks, Flash,
PhotoShop, PSP, VB, ASP. CSS and other newsgroups. While I have seen you in
Fireworks group occasionally in the role of a novice and not as an expert, I
don't ever recall seeing you in Dreamweaver. So don't give me this stuff
that you have migrated to Dreamweaver and that somehow makes you superior
than the rest of us who are "still" using (shudder) FrontPage. And if you
like Dreamweaver so much then why even worry about coming to FrontPage
newsgroup? Oh, I remember, you like the site management and publishing part
of FP, don't you? That's one of the oldest excuses I can remember since FP97
days that these so-called Dreamweaver pros, like yourself, justify in coming
back to FrontPage. Or, could it be that you are just trying to get a flavor
of Dreamweaver to perpetuate the myth that DW users are somehow superior to
FP users?

As to your question to what I've contributed to this newsgroup, probably a
lot by not insulting others like you do on a regular basis.

Get an attitude adjustment, lady, and get off your permanent PMS. Being
grumpy is not a virtue to boast about. Try to spread some sunshine around
you, you'll be surprised how it affects your blood pressure.

Joe,
Your response to all of this is huge. These newsgroups are chock full of weak
people who hide behind computers in little sad and dark rooms, and spout their
crap out at other people. Things they would NEVER say to someone in person.

LET ME BE VERY CLEAR HERE!!!!!!!! I AM NOT SAYING THAT ABOUT YOU!!!!!!!!!!

What I am saying is that sadly, since the inception of newsgroups, they've just
become a place for cowards to come and flame. This Frontpage group has VERY
thankfully stayed mostly on track and away from that.

You did not do what I consider flaming. You had your heart and your intentions
firmly in the right place. I OFTEN, oh my God, SO OFTEN, feel like lashing out
at people who aren't helpful; they just say crap to see their IDIOCY on screen.
(Example: "Eleanor's website is about her and mudbaths, she's not getting
attention like younger women.... blah blah blah)
I understand your feelings in your original response/post. I really do. Your
points were well made, and you felt them in your heart. And as you clearly see
now..... it's the personal stuff that hurts.

Eleanor really is a decent woman, and I'm sure she will forgive you. It took
some humongous courage and sacrifice to come back in here and apologize, and I
have a huge amount of admiration for you right now. You are sincere, and I
suspect a very wonderful person. Sometimes we make these errors in life. Do
forgive yourself.

Have a great rest of the weekend! :)

Tim

Tim:

You are absolutely right. I am so darned ashamed of myself that I cannot
even explain. I feel like two inches tall and a complete jerk. What in the
world was I thinking? I assure you I was not on drugs - never been on it. It
was a complete lapse of good judgment on my part and I certainly beg for
Eleanor's apology though I don't think she will ever forgive me. I have
never felt so bad in letting my stupid, ignorant, arrogant emotions take
over my judgment. Even if Eleanor forgives me, I will never be able to
forgive myself for reacting like a spoiled child.

I know words are like shots, can't be taken back, but if there is any such
thing as repentance, I will certainly do it. Eleanor, I am so sorry. I have
just lowered my estimation about myself in my own eyes.

And Tim, thank you for putting me in my place. Seriously.

Joe,
A grown-up man who acted like an idiot and a jerk but is truly, sincerely
sorry.

I do take issue with this reasoning! Sounds like you think you know me!!Have
you read the tutorials??? After reading them I do hope that people will
enjoy the photography from my travels. Is that wrong? I sure am taking a
beating here. Why do YOU spend time here in this newsgroup??
Joe, your apology is accepted, thank you!
Thank you to all who tried to help out with this discussion.
Now I think I shall go play around in Dreamweaver land.

You go girl!! I keep screaming that at people myself. Guess they don't
remember the old adage about giving a man a fish versus teaching him how to
fish............

I'm behind you, oh Grumpy One.

Tim and JoAnn:

Thanks for your wonderful words. I, once again, apologize for my emotional
outbursts that were so out of line and out of bound. I just wish I could
take 'em back. I'll be fine in next couple of days but this incident will
remain in my mind for a long time to come as one of the lowest points of my
life. I will use it as a lesson and move on to become a much better person
than I am now.

I hope Eleanor comes back here and forgives me.

Regards and thanks,

Joe
