FrontPage 2000: Error importing zip file to local copy of web

B

Bill Eckert

Recently (since installing SP-3 for Office?) I have been
unable to import some files to the copy of our web site
that I have on my C drive. I can import these sames files
directly to our live published web site using the same
process (Select the desired target foler, File/Import/Add
File, browse to desired file. It adds the file to the
import list, but when I click OK to import I get an error -
see below).

It seems to be size related, but I'm not sure. I can
import smaller files without any problem. The files I'm
having trouble with are Winzip (*.zip) files of several
megabytes. Smaller zip files are OK, as are PDF, DOC, XLS
etc.

I get the same error message if I open the live web, copy
the file I want, and then open my local web in FrontPage
and try to paste the file into the desired folder.

The error message is: An error has occurred accessing your
FrontPage web files. "Authors - if authoring against a web
server, pelase contact the webmaster for this server's
site. WebMasters - please see the server's system log for
more details."

I see nothing in my system.log file concerning failed
attempts to import these files.

After reading some other posts, I did try deleting the
folders created by FrontPage (_derived, cgi-bin, _vti_cnf,
_vti_pvt) and letting FrontPage re-create them, which it
did very nicely, but to no avail.

Thanks for any help you can provide.

Although the error message mentioned in this support
document (814332) is different than what I am
experiencing, I tried both suggested fixes - the registry
change, and installing the FP2002 server extensions. The
problem still exists.

The error message referred to in the referenced Microsoft
support document is "The Server Connection Times Out".

What I am getting when attempting to import large files
into my local C drive copy of our website is:

"An error has occurred accessing your FrontPage web
files. "Authors - if authoring against a web server,
pelase contact the webmaster for this server's site.
WebMasters - please see the server's system log for
more details."

Any other thoughts?

Am familiar w/ that error
I usually find the even though you get the error FP imports the files anyway
- to get out of the error loop (after trying twice to import) cancel the import, then run a tools recalculate hyperlinks and you
should see the imported files

Let us know if that works

PS you will get a dialog when you close the site saying there are still file to be imported, select not to import them or you will
be in the same error loop again

Stefan is correct, it's the same event, and the same error
occurs. I'm wondering if the problem has to do with some
limit on the total size of the web on my c drive. It's
approaching 200MB (I still have 7GB free on the drive).
It's odd (but fortunate) that this only happens on my
local c drive copy of the website, and not on our live
published web site. The files I'm trying to import
currently are around 6MB. Up until very recently, this has
never been a problem. It does not seem to be related to
the specific file I'm trying to import, or to the target
folder, as other attempts with different folders or other
files of this size give the same result.

I tried removing other files from that target folder,
taking about 30 MB in total out of the web. Then I tried
to import the 6MB file I've been dealing with. No change.

Short term fix
Create a new folder and create a new txt file in that folder
Rename that file to the same name.ext as your zip (ignore FP complaints)
Link to that file in the new folder
Then create a subweb from that folder, and FTP the real zip file to that subweb
(don't open the subweb in FP online)

| The error occurs immediately when I click OK to import, or
| attempt a drag & drop. I've tried several times, and tried
| the recalc hyperlinks a few times. The file is not there.
| The file is a 6MB zip file I'm importing to a "data"
| folder. It's a file I'm making available for download from
| our web site.
