Front USB port problems

Hi, I am trying to install the front USB ports for my mother board, I have
checked and rechecked the order of the connectors and they are correct,
windows recognizes them but when I connect anything to the ports, windows
says that it does not recognize the device, even though when I connect them
to the ports in the back there are no problems, is there a way to test the
ports so I can know were the problem is laying?
My motherboard does accept front USB ports 4 in total
I have sp 1 installed
and have XP pro

Do you have the mobo manual? There should be a diagram
showing the pin-out on the mobo and the case manual should
show which connectors should go on which pins..

Update the motherboard driver from the manufacturer website. If this does not
work e-mail the mobo manufacturer...

Good luck

Ok but just to be sure...

Did you use the cable that came with the mobo or the case? When I built my
last PC I descovered that there were two different layouts in common use for
the pins at the mobo end....

1) On my MSI motherboard the pin layout had "rotational symetry" eg they
were arranged so that it didn't matter which way around you connected the 2
x 5 header.

However,

2) The Intel standard layout has "mirror symetry".

The physical connector is the same on both eg a 2 x 5 socket.

If your mobo manufac decided to use layout 1) and your case manufac supplied
a cable to suite layout 2) it won't work.

All modern mobo should really use the Intel standard 2) but I don't know if
that's true.

I had a motherboard that required a jumper to be set to enable the mobo
ports. I'm not speaking of the USB ports on the back of the PC. If it is
correct, possbly, the port may be 1.1 only vice 2.0, and you're attempting
to use a 2.0 device.

My mother board is an Intel D865GBF I have read over and over the USB header
Pin out and I connected it correctly, I downloaded the USB 2.0 drivers and
installed them, windows recognizes the ports, now instead of having 4 now I
have 8, the problem is when I connect something to the front usb ports,
windows does not recognize the device, for example my usb memory, it is fine
if I connect it to the back but not in the front.

As I said is there a way to test the ports to see if they are the ones at
fault, or is it a configuration problem???

Most likely you have the + and - data wires switched.

The D865GBF uses the Intel standard layout, but what case do
you have and as another asked, what cable are you using?

Well the conectors are square and separated, not 1 whole connector for all
but 1 little connector for each cable, they are clearly marked, and I have
them connected as it says in the instructions. I don't know what to do... is
there a way to test them to know if the ports are ok? the ports came
separately from my case.. I bought them later....
