Front Page Locks Up - XP Problem?

When I try to start Front Page, it locks up. When I try to close it, I get
this error:

c:\Windows\Subsystem32\dumprep.exe

The NTVDMCPU has encountered an illegal instruction.
CS: 053d IP: 035f OP: 63 6f 72 72 75
Choose "close" to terminate application.

But when I try to close, nothing happens - the error stays there. I do
control/alt/delete to get the task manager, but I can't close via that,
either. I end up having to turn off the PC by hand and rebooting -

What is wrong?

Clear your browser history and cache files.
Run a Virus / Trojan scan
The run a detect and repair from Control Panel Add/Remove programs.

Thanks. That's not at all what I was expecting. Looking on the MS site,
similar errors talk about trying to run a 16-bit program on a 32 bit system
and the command.exe file needs to be replaced - which those errors say are
causing the illegal operation.

I have McAfee virus protection - I've uninstalled/reinstalled FrontPage,
also repaired Windows XP. To no avail. There's just some glitch somewhere.

I answered that way because there is no such directory:
c:\Windows\Subsystem32
on a windows xp machine, and a google search for "The NTVDMCPU has
encountered an illegal instruction" brings up many references to Trojans and
virii.

There is C:\WINDOWS\system and C:\WINDOWS\system32

dumprep.exe however is a real file and lives in C:\WINDOWS\system32

Did you upgrade your machine from an earlier version of windows??
If so this might apply:
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=245184

Also, XP doesn't have a command.exe. It has cmd.exe and command.com, both
of which live in:
C:\WINDOWS\system32
You can find a copy of cmd.exe in C:\WINDOWS\system32\dllcache but you'll
have to copy command.com
off of the install disk.

OK - I'm an idiot. I copied the error wrong. It's
C:\windows\system32\cumprep.exe

So any idea what that would mean?

Steve Easton

That is not a valid windows XP file.

Delete it, if Windows will let you.
If not, boot to safe mode and delete it.

Then in safe mode run regedit and do a search for:
C:\windows\system32\cumprep.exe

and delete all instances found

Reboot to normal mode and run a full virus scan.
