fresh install of XP Pro SP2, can't get networking back

N

Niteowl

hi all,

I formatted and reinstalled windows on my computer.. I have 2 hard drives, 6
partitions, 3 on each drive... C: on one, D: on the second, E: and F: on
the same drive as C:, and G: and H: on the drive with the D: drive.

C: is a primary partition, all others are logical drives in extended
partitions.

I have shared all the drives as before, but when trying to map them on
another XP system, it keeps popping up a window for a username and password.
Never happened in previous installation... so I have not idea what is
different this time.

I've gone in and changed the permissions to allow EVERYONE Full control..
and still I can't get the drives to display so I can map them.

What am I doing wrong this time? I've never had this much trouble setting
up the networking in XP...

FYI, after installing XP from the CD, I updated everything from windows
updates... so all is current. I don't want to install anything else till I
get this working correctly (or at least like it used to)

I have no password on my profile, I did however give the administrive
profile a password this time, usually I just leave it blank, is that the
issue??

thanks for any help,

niteowl

Yes, that's the issue. The local account names match but the passwords
don't.

so is there a way to fix it?

if not, then do I have to assign a password somewhere so I can access the
computer from elsewhere?

I also noticed I can't change the shared name, it keeps reverting back to
"C$" or "D$"... used to be "vvfast c" or "vvfast d"... ??

or do I just format again and start over?

thanks

Make the passwords match or use the guest account. C$ is the administrative
share. You can create new shares and name them as you wish.

and how do I do that?

on my win98 machines, in the network neighborhood it shows the entire
network including the newly reformatted XP machine but, it's showing the
network address as \\main\IPC$ and asking for a password, but when I put in
the administrative password it tells me it's wrong... , that password
worked on the other XP machines, but doesn't seem to work in the win98
machines... ???

I went into User Accounts, and clicked on Manage my passwords, and I clicked
on "Add", typed in the name of the server (Main), and under username I typed
"network\administrator" and under password typed the password I entered on
setup...

Is that right? Is that even the right place to be doing what I need?

Is there a way to go into the Administrative profile and simply remove the
password so it will work like before?

thanks,
niteowl

Dave,

I have tried several things now, none of which worked...

I applied a password to my profile, then on the welcome screen hit
Ctrl/Alt/Del twice to enter the Adminstrator profile... removed the
password, then signed on my user profile, removed that password, so now the
system has no passwords (as it usually would have had)

still I get a request from the other machines on the network for a password
to access the shared drives.

the "$" defaults still appear, and even when I create a new share name, it
reverts to the "$" profile... (the other XP machine does not do this, I'm
guessing since I never created an administrative password on it ??)

I"m beginning to think a reformat is the only way to fix this... (sigh)

What am I not doing? or is it that I simply can't undo what I've done?

thanks,
gary

You'll want to create an account (in Users Accounts) on the WinXP machines
with the username and password that you use to logon to the other machine(s)
with. Then you'll need to share out the resource(s) with permissions for
those users. Also make sure they're all part of the same workgroup and on
the same subnet. Then you'll no longer be prompted for the IPC$ password
(Inter-process communication)

Also turn off the firewalls (at least till you get something going) and
enable NetBIOS over TCP/IP.

In a peer level workgroup, when you try to access resources on a Windows
NT/2000/XP/2003 machine, Windows NT/2000/XP/2003 needs to authenticate the
user. If the user account doesn't exist in it's local account database, then
access will be denied.

You might also look at using 'simple file sharing'

thanks for the info and time, I figured it was easier to just format and
start over... .it worked perfectly... so I didn't have to change the other 8
machines on my network.. :)

again, thanks,
