Frequent reboots needed to maintain internet connection

did you unbind IPv6?

oops, sorry. I just realized what I wrote. The RCS DCM425 is a cable modem
- there is no router at my relatives house. Do you know if this modem is
compatible with Vista?

PCG405 said:
Yes I checked the list and didn't see it. Also, I looked for the router the
my relative uses at her house, RCA DCM425, and that's not on the list either.

However, after make that power setting change last night, the internet
connection is still working this morning - but I don't understand that
because previously when the internet connection fails it occurs while I'm
using the computer - and I thought power management kicks in when there is no
activity with the mouse or keyboard for a certain amount of time.

In the meantime I will contact the ISP who provides the router and see about
a VISTA compatible router.
Thank you.

OK, I'll have to first try bringing everything to my house and see if I can
get it working here. Before I disconnect it I'll run and save ipconfig / all
at its current location. Then post it...

But at least if I test it at my house and get it working we'll know for sure
it is not a hardware problem... If I can get it working good at my house
then I'll take it back to her house and spend the time to get it configured
so it works for her there.
On 3/2 I'll be picking it up and post an update then.
Thank you.

I have an HP desktop with Vista connected to the internet via a cable modem.
When turning the computer on, there is an internet connection. After a few
minutes the internet connection is lost and the only way to regain the
connection is to reboot and then it will work for a few more minutes - then
reboot is needed and this cycle continues.... The ISP insists that I am
receiving a good signale and it must be a problem with the computer. Vista's
network repair / troubleshooting does not detect a problem.
Any suggestions...?
Thank you.

Yes, I did unbind IPv6. I also deslected the power option so the network
card does not get turned off. LAst night I went to a couple of webistes and
left it on all night. Then, this morning I checked one site before going to
work and the connection was still there. This evening I opened internet
explorer and went to several different sites and then it failed. I have
another router in my house which I tried tonight too. It is a Linksys
WRT54GS (wireless router but I am plugged indirectly to it - NOT a wireless
connection) Vers 2.0 with firmware version 3.37.6. I checked with Linksys
support and they advised to me upgrade the firmware to version 4.71.1 to be
compatible. I did this upgrade and then tried various websites. After going
to several different sites over about 10-15 minutes the connection was lost
again!
It seems like if I go to a variety of websites it loses connection. If I
only go to Yahoo.com for example and then close IE. It will maintain the
connection for several hours until I actually getback on and try going to
several different sites.
This has been going on for me trying to get this computer's network
connection working since it was purchased new in Sept 2007. Is there
anything else I can try with the software or is it possibly a hardware
problem where I should call HP? Or should I just load Win XP and try that?

Open an elevated cmd prompt and leave running on your desktop. (run
as administrator)

AFTER it loses connection, get a text output of ipconfig /all and
save in notepad.

then in the cmd window type

ipconfig /flushdns

does that change anything?

can you connect at that point again?

if not, when you get back online, post the text of the saved notepad
file.

It seems like if I go to a variety of websites it loses connection.

While on the subject of IPCONFIG, next time you get kicked off,
try this:

IPCONFIG /release
IPCONFIG /renew

just for the heck of it.

Let us know what happens.

if there is nothing in the event viewer at the time that the
connection stops working to assist further in diagnosing this, it is
time to call HP. It could be hardware. I'd make certain you are
using all the latest drivers HP has on their site for your machine
for Vista and apply any BIOS updates for your machine first.

I called HP and they recommended a complete system restore. I backed up my
personal files to DVD and ran the restore which reinstalled Vista and brought
the computer back to its factory condition. It is now working fine. I added
my other programs back on and personal files and everything is working good.
Thanks,

if you take the router out of the picture and connect directly to
the cable modem OR use a different router, do you have the issue?

I followed this post step by step and the ipconfig /flushdns did not allow me
to get back online. I even tried closing IE and opening it again with no
luck. Below is the ipconfig /all that you asked for:

:

Open an elevated cmd prompt and leave running on your desktop. (run
as administrator)

AFTER it loses connection, get a text output of ipconfig /all and
save in notepad.

then in the cmd window type

ipconfig /flushdns

does that change anything?

can you connect at that point again?

if not, when you get back online, post the text of the saved notepad
file.

It seems like if I go to a variety of websites it loses connection.

if you have had these problems for a week, try a restore point just
before that. do things improve? do a custom rather than express
install of updates offered from WU and see if one of the updates is
the cause. also could be some update from a third party AV/firewall
vendor.

Hello Sorry but i got the same problem since a week When the connection
to Internet is not activ after starting Vista i couldn't use the browser
( IE or Firefox ) until I reboot the PC But under Linux-Debian i never
got this problem : after the connection to Internet is activ i can use
the browsers (Epiphany or Iceweasel ( like Mozilla Firefox)) So the
problem is due to Vista Very strange : i couldn'y got any page ( server
not found) but the programs which use Internet ( like Firefox) succeed
in their work ( like verifying the plug-ins) I use Vista Home premium 32
bit on a Dell computer

thanks for the update.

Hello After looking on Internet i tried these : "netsh interface tcp set
global autotuning=disables" Now the connection to Internet is fast Hope
that will be enough to make the connection to Internet avalaible as soon
as the PC is on I shall try again in 10 days : going far away from home
for holidays To hard to go back with the lot of updates for Vista :
last day with two reboots for applicating them !!! Best regards
