frequent crashes; assistence requested

Hi.

I have Windows XP Home Edition service pack 2.

For a significant number of days, I have been having systeem freezes,
programs that didn't want to shut down properly when I tried to deactivate
the machine, error messages at reboot (to short to read them), messages that
previous (registry?) data had been recovered at reboot, blue screens at
reboot. Problems were most prevalent when the computer rebooted after it had
been offline for quite a while. Like, when I shut it down in the evening, and
reboot it the next morning, very often these problems occur.

I have done about all I can and know .

I have Mcafee firewall and anti virus, and two good commercial anti spyware
programs. The anti spyware programs are not from McAfee. They and Windows XP
worked well together, until recently. I don't know or remember what changed
the situation.

I must say it has become quite annoying. I have tried deinstalling and
reinstalling all security software (yes, McAfee tends to leave stuf behind,
but for as far as I know I have taken care of that), I tried deleting
temporary files with %temp% and the other way to delete temporary files. And
then to fix any registry error with the Registry Mechanic from Pctools. I
have made extra system restore points. I have used system recovery a number
of times. At some times, when the reboot went wrong, I have used a previous
restore point. I have tried many variations/combinations. It just doesn't
seem to work. Not for long anyway.

I really don't want to format the harddrive, and complete a full reinstall.

Any advice/insight would be appreciated.

Thank you.

This sounds like hardware problems, but it is difficult to tell without
seeing the machine. Since you say you have done "all you can and know",
take the machine to a professional computer repair shop (not your local
version of BigStoreUSA) for diagnosis and fix.

Open the machine, blow out all the dust, clean the fans. Reseat all cards
and memory. Download these utilities and run at least two of them to check
the memory. Let them run for awhile, not just a single pass.

Memtest86+
http://www.memtest.org/

Windows Memory Diagnostic
http://oca.microsoft.com/en/windiag.asp

Download a drive diagnostic utility from the hard drive manufacturer's web
site. That will create a bootable floppy or CD. Boot from that and run the
diagnostics.

Make sure you have a full and complete backup of all important data.

Hi.

I'm rather certain that it's not a real hardware problem, although I can't
rule out any problems with device drivers.

You see, I have had a situation something like this, maybe two months ago,
then I reformatted the harddrive and reinstalled Windows XP Home Edition
service pack 1a, then I tried to update it to service pack 2, of which about
two attempts failed, but after that I didn't have no or almost no problems
till recently.

Thanks anyway for trying to help.

Thanks. But that requires quite some work. I'll see if I can get the problem
under control in the next few days. If not, I may try that utility/program.
