We have a Compaq desktop bought in 2000 with a Duron
700Mhz chip running Windows XP a clean install from ME.
With the advent of the Sasser worm I upgraded my Norton
AntiVirus and ran windows update successfully. Since that
time XP will freeze without warning in any application.
Scanning the newsgroups I did the common things - ran
Adaware and Spybot, scanned for viruses and defragged the
hard drive. The latter two never completed because of
freezing. I un-installed the windows update (but kept up
the firewall) with no benefit (so I re-installed it). I
re-installed Norton. Nothing. Still freezing. I
upgraded all my drivers, which also didn't help. So I
broke down and re-installed windows and cleared out my
hard drive (total 15GB - 8 GB used). Still (!)
freezing. There is no error message, the computer just
stops responding. Task manager won't even come up. Now
I would say that this is because the machine is starting
to "show its age", but it started with the Windows
hotfix/Norton update. Since re-installing windows and
Norton I have ensured there are no viruses and the drive
is optimized. Any clues? Is this the end of the
machine. Thanks in advance.
