Freezing games in XP

My computer recently crashed, again, because of Kazaa crap, so i reinstalled Windows XP using the Quick Restore disks that came with my comp. Since then, whenever I play a game, whether it be Starcraft of Call of Duty, the game runs fine for a minute or two, then it pratically freezes and runs at less than a frame a second. It will repeat this process consistently with any game, as far as I can tell. I updated the hell out of my grahics drivers, processor, and anything else I could find. What should I do??

I'd check to see what else is running in the background, and keep an eye on
it when running a game (alt-tab out when it slows down), look for anything
using more then say 5% CPU usage. Using the Task Manager is the simplest
option hit CTRL+ALT+DEL.

That would be my first port of action.

Also is the hard disk drive thrashing away, usually there is a HDD activity
light on most machines, when you're running a game (Starcraft particularly
as it's so low spec) you should get virtually no HDD activity going on, this
would indicate something either swallowing masses of RAM or running away in
the background.

Have you checked for virus' and other nasties and got all the critical
updates from www.windowsupdate.com ? www.grisoft.com and www.lavasoftusa.com
both do free anti-virus and ad/spy-ware scanners.
