Freezes after adding RAM

Dear all,

My laptop freezes periodically after I install more RAM.

The laptop, an IBM Thinkpad T40 (model 237372U) running XP, comes with
256MB RAM preinstalled. After I installed a Crucial 512MB SODIMM (type
recommended by Crucial), the laptop freezes daily - it becomes
completely nonresponsive to anything but a hard reset. I have got a
replacement component from Crucial (same type), but the problem is
there with the new SODIMM too.

With just the preinstalled RAM without the additional Crucial RAM, I
experience no freezes. I have not had the opportunity to try any other
brand of RAM.

I realize that the problem may be an incompatibility between Crucial
RAM and my system (too much heat produced?), but I wanted to post here
in to see if any of you might have any tips on OS related problems
with adding RAM - virtual memory, paging, virus software, etc.

I have installed the latest BIOS software, drivers and OS updates.
Virtual memory size is set to twice the total memory size.

Any suggestions would be highly appreciated.

Hello

Before doing any ram upgrade make sure that what your installing
is compatible with your laptop

Also increase the size of your pagefile. The minimum
pagefile must be bigger than the available RAM. At least
1.5x's is a good minimum.

Often you must put the larger SODIM (or SDRAM) in the lowest
number socket and then the small in order. See your laptop
manual if this is required. Also, make sure the BIOS
supports the extra RAM.

The timing of both SODIMs must be the same.

The pagefile must be large enough to handle any read/write
operations that over-flow the installed RAM. With 768 MB
RAM you might need only 100 MB of virtual memory and with
256 you might need 512 MB of virtual memory, it all depends
on what application you have open and the file sizes.
