Is it freezing or just stopping there which in turn requires you to click
on the user name to go the rest of the way to the desktop?

It is a freeze. Since I only have one user name in use and no password it never comes to the user logon screen. It has been working fine, this just started a couple of days ago

Thanks

Okay. The reason I asked is that after installing the .NET framework update
(the newer one of the two), there *is* a stop at the welcome screen on
systems with only one user account. The reason being, a hidden account is
added for .NET framework. Setting up auto logon is a few simple steps and
you're back to booting directly to the desktop.

But the above is a simple stop - not a lockup. Since you're having a
lockup, you'll need to troubleshoot this a bit and try to figure out what
is causing the problem. Troubleshooting startup problems is very similar to
troubleshooting shutdown problems as the trail usually leads back to a
driver or a background program. Because of this the troubleshooting guides
for XP shutdown problems at the following site should be helpful:

http://www.aumha.org/win5/a/shtdwnxp.htm

Additional suggestions: Check Event Viewer for any information it can
offer. Try a clean boot to see if the problem persists (no background
programs or non-Microsoft services loading). Create a temporary user
account and log on with it to see if it has the same problems as your
everyday account or not.

Thanks for your help. I found the problem by using selective startup. It turned out to be an issue with Norton unerase. I currently have it unselected to load
