Freeware Mail proxy?

Ric

I'm looking for a program that will act as a mail proxy but can send mail to
different accounts based on aliases. That is, mail is collected from the
same e-mail account but proxied to different accounts depending on the "to"
header, with a catchall account for any aliases not defined.

Does such a program exist? The closest I've seen is a program from Burrosoft
called Office Mail, which downloads mail, rather than proxies, and then
distributes them like I want. However, it doesn't allow activation of the
leave mail on server option unless you register and I'd really like to find
a free alternative. I'd also really prefer a program that acts as a proxy,
rather than a local cache, since that would simplify mail management at
different locations.

Thanks,
Ric

Are you talking after its downloaded and then delivered to various accounts
on a LAN

Not sure what you are asking...

Try Mercury Mail
Not a mail proxy as such as it is a full email server, not even sure there
is such a thing free or commercial...

but Mercury will do most what you want

What I have is a domain with a catchall e-mail forwarding service. I want to
distribute mail sent to different users to different e-mail accounts on my
local server. But I don't want to actually locally administrate the e-mail
server for the domain as I can't guarantee 24/7 uptime on my server.

So I want the local user to use pop3 locally, and the local server then goes
to the actual pop3 server to check for mail for that user. So say if the
catchall user account for my domain is (e-mail address removed). User A checks
for mail locally and is given mail sent to (e-mail address removed). User B is given
mail sent to (e-mail address removed). etc... There would be one additional account
that receives any mail present in (e-mail address removed) which does not
belong to any other existing user. So (e-mail address removed) or
(e-mail address removed) would be given to the catchall user but not mail addressed
to (e-mail address removed) or (e-mail address removed).

Ideally, I want the local server not to download mail from the pop3 server,
but merely act as a proxy. So when user A checks for mail locally, the proxy
checks for mail at the (e-mail address removed) account, scans the headers for
mail addressed to (e-mail address removed) and forwards those messages to the user's
client. It's then up to the user whether mail is kept on the server or
deleted. If user A sends a delete command for a message locally, the proxy
deletes that message from the real account.

I don't know if such a proxy exists. The alternative is for the local server
to download all mail from the catchall account and distribute it locally. In
this case, though, I need it to leave mail on the real server for x number
of days, as I will need to access the account from outside the local server.
I think Mercury Mail may do all this, so I'll give that a try for now.
Thanks very much for the suggestion.

Try Hamster. It is a news and mail proxy and might do what you want.
