Is there a freeware ftp server that can run as a service on Windows XP
Home or Pro? Perhaps with no icon showing on the systray?

Nice, the first Google findings there are alerts, that this could
be used as a hack, because it's really mostly invisible and installed
by a trojan allows access to harddisc ;-)

FileZilla Server currently seems the best option to me. Not only freeware,
but fully open source:

http://filezilla.sourceforge.net/

It lets you choose yourself if you need a tray icon or not at any time.

I've also run WarFTP server (http://www.warftp.org/) for quite some time. I
still like it a lot, but FileZilla is a bit more transparent to configure
and seems lighter on resources.

Sometimes when malware seems to reinstate a file very time you remove
it, you can create a harmless file of the same name, and write-protect
it.
