Free SMS from your desktop (500+/month)

Richard

Hi all,

I've written an application that will allow you to send free text
messages to your friends and family from your computer.

How it works is that it acts as a standard interface to other free SMS
gateway providers out there. You can send messages to multiple people,
split long messages over multiple SMS', manage your contacts and
message quotas and much more.

If you already use eGenie (which I also developed) then I would advise
you to try out this application as it is substantially better.

Best of all the application is totally free and a lot of the providers
supply free text messages. It has been worked out that, at the moment,
if you subscribed to all of the free services, this would give you over
500 free messages a month - which isn't bad really!

Details, screenshots and downloads are at http://www.mercury.uk.net/

I'm interested in hearing feedback from you including bugs and
suggestions for improvement. In addition, any recommendations where I
can get the application reviewed would be appreciated.
Regards,

Richard.

Sounds good! Along the same lines, anyone know of a way to *receive*
SMS messages on one's computer for free? There were some sites that
were providing this service gratis a few years ago, but as far as I
know they all eventually started charging a fee.

Hi there, have downloaded and installed it, couple of quick queries tho, you
mention 500+ a month free sms, where can I get those, the most I have seen
is 300 through 118, the orange site does not seem to contain any free sms,
although am EXTREMELY greatful, even with just 10 a day, thats 30 quid a
month saving!!

Secondly this qoog7.exe you said in another post you dont know about it,
but you said here you wrote it, confused lol, but I dont know the first
thing about programming, all I am concerned is programs on my pc !

I took a little bit of a liberty and added up each of the ones that
gave you free SMS so:

o2 = 10/month
sms.ac = 8/day = 240/month
118888 = 10/day = 300/month
orange = 30/month

total = 10+240+300+30 = 580/month
(assuming average of 30 days per month and rounded down for good
measure)

I also plan to add fonetastic and a couple of others in the coming
weeks which will increase this number even more.

I wrote Mercury but not qoog7.exe. I have no idea what the qoog7.exe
application is all about I'm afriad. The installer I provide on my site
doesn't contain that file at all.
Hope that clarifies things,

Regards,

Richard.

Can the 'From' line be edited to include my number so they can reply to my
phone?

It depends on the SMS gateway you are using.

Generally though, free gateways don't give you this ability. This is
not a Mercury limitation, if I could make them replyable, then I would.

Regards,
Richard.

ps. VGSMail and Kapow! are replyable - but they cost.

I spoke too soon, sms.ac's messages are apparantly replyable (8 free
per day).

I haven't used them in a long while though so it may have changed.

Regards,

Richard.

ps. If you have any suggestions for free (or paid-for) gateways to add,
then please submit them to the forum on the website!
