Free Replacement for Visual Basic and REALbasic

In reading my free Langa List column this morning, one of the headlines
is the subject. Scrolling down of course shows that you only get to
access this on Fred's pay service.

Anyone here know what he is touting as a free replacement for VB and
RB?

Thanks in advance,

Chris

Dont Know about the Langa List but maybe this will interest you

Free Microsoft Visual Basic 2005 Express

The Microsoft Visual Basic 2005 Express Edition is available for download,
free of charge, from Microsoft. It allows you to create programs for the
..NET framework. Like all the current versions of their software, you will
need Windows 2000, XP, 2003, x64 or Vista. It comes with the MSDN Express
Library and the Microsoft SQL Server 2005 Express Edition. If you are
looking for the complete Visual Basic package, you will need to buy the
commercial Microsoft Visual Studio Professional 2005. Note: If downloading
the (approximately) 450MB package is a problem for you, such as might be the
case if you're accessing the Internet through a slow Internet connection,
you may prefer to purchase the Microsoft Visual Basic 2005 Express CDROM and
have it delivered to you.

From what I can figure out on the Microsoft web site, it appears that you
must be running XP with service pack 2 to be able to install these programs.
Has anyone tried to install them on a system that just has service pack 1 on
it?

He could be referring to SharpDevelop
(http://www.icsharpcode.net/OpenSource/SD/Default.aspx) which is a
free, open source development environment for .NET including C# and
VB.Net.

It's "HOT Basic": <http://www.doylepublishingutah.com/download.htm>

No idea if or how it works, I have religious aversions to using any
language whose name contains the word "basic".

Why?

Dos-Man

It isn't clear why a programming language would require a service pack
to work.
It is equally unclear why it wouldn't come with it if it did.

Obviously a newly developed application. VERY sparse documentation.
No example files. Several menu selections are "still under
development". No ability to link in dll's of any other type of third
party control.

It might be good for youngster looking to learn a language, but it's
not ready for what I would call professional usage.

In the "about Hot Basic" window, the developer gives special thanks to
kidev.com which says:

" This site is mainly focused on my project Linley Compiler. It is a
native x86 compiler for the Windows 32 platform. It is fully written in
Visual Basic. But compiles directly into machine code without the need
of any runtime libraries or other dependencies. It is more like an High
Level Assembly Language and includes a built in linker for
PE-Executables. There are no external tools needed.".

Interesting.

I'm surprised Fred touted this as a replacement for Visual Basic and
Real Basic. It has promise, but is a long way from finished.

Fred didn't tout it, it was just an entry in the newsletter.

He often runs items that are sent in by developers/readers/etc, but
often he doesn't test them out unless he can write an article on them.

Carolyn ,

I did not follow the link , are you talking about Visual Basic 2005 express
?
If yes , I tried on a PC with XP SP1 on it ,
it did not work , so I installed it (but did not use it ) on another PC.

Can you give us a report on it? I would appreciate that.

It's very, very bare bones. I looked at it -- small download, should have
been a hint -- and it really doesn't look like it will be much help. The
help screens are, in my opinion, useless, and there are lots of references
to things like "we don't do this yet," etc.

It needs some documentation, and some maturity, to be of any use, in my
opinion.

A free basic language. Can do windows programming as well as console
programming. JustBasic (from the creator of Liberty Basic)
http://justbasic.com/

The program is a teaser to Liberty Basic so you don't get access to
DLL's and such. The additional features of Liberty Basic are listed
here http://justbasic.com/learnmore.html But I don't think there are
any major missing parts so you should be able to make a decent program
with the free version.
