Free online calendar reco's?

Hi smart people,

I'm recently out of a job where I had easy access to an Exchange Server
account and, thus, an easy ability to share calendar events with my
girlfriend.

In looking for a calendar replacement, I noticed CalendarHub.com (by way of
http://feeds.feedburner.com/Techcrunch?m=579) and I'm now looking for some
online solution that will actually send an actionable invitation to an
Exchange/OL user that would create a meeting in their calendar, rather than
requiring that person to sign up for the online solution (iow, some online,
free calendar that sends iCal invites and accepts the meeting
accepted/refused back?

There are several publicly-available Exchange services. Google will find
them for you.

So, I googled 'publicly available exchange' and then added mailbox... and
calendar... and free[1]... and I haven't really come up with anything.

So, let me rephrase.

I'm looking for a free, online service where I can have a calendar which
will allow me to invite someone who uses Outlook/Exchange where they will
receive a meeting invite that will be usable.

While I'm functional at using Google, I just haven't been able to answer my
own question.

and calendar... and free[1]... and I haven't really come up with

Well, Yahoo! Intellisync will certainly allow syncing Outlook's Calendar and
Yahoo's calendar and you can send invitations to people from the Yahoo!
Calendar for events you schedule there. They can drag/drop your invitation
to their calendar and create an appointment, although they may have to
adjust the time manually. Not perfect, but workable.

Not that I want to look a gift horse in the mouth, but....

Were you actually suggesting a hosted exchange server solution for a single
user? While I understand that you are giving your assistance freely and of
your own time, I have to question the logic behind the suggestion. In the
interest of improving my ability to ask a question, is there something I
could have said that would have helped you understand that this costly
solution wouldn't have been optimal (or even sub-optimal?) I mean, I even
put 'free'
in the subject line.

Or I could just use Hotmail's Calendaring system which works just fine with
Exchange. I didn't even know it existed when I asked the question. Heck,
I'm not even sure when they added it, considering I just saw another blog
entry somewhere asking where gmail and hotmail's calendar solutions were.
But then, I've been using Hotmail through OE for so long....

Anyways, it seems to work just fine, apart from a couple speed issues, and a
formatting issue.

While I want to thank you for your attempt to help, I would recommend that
you think
your answers through in the future. I mean, the whole hosted exchange
solution
is just whack, sorry to say.

Sure. Why not? A cursory search turned up some relative inexpensive sites.
You pay for Internet access, don't you?

I did think it through. Why would you assume I did not without any evidence

Yes, I do. I also pay for a lot of things. Hence why I *don't* want to pay
for things I don't *have* to pay for. Inexpensive != free. If you lose
your job, you'll probably grok that equation a little better. Frankly, I
find that paying for things like health insurance, insulin, food, and rent
much more important than paying for a calendar solution so that my
girlfriend and myself can keep our concert/movie schedule up to date and
easily accessible while on the go.

I think the evidence lies in the fact that I asked for a free solution and
you offered solutions that weren't free without saying anything even like 'I
know this isn't a free solution, but....'

obviously, there was no need to state the fact.
