Free Corel Draw clone???

I say most people who doesn't produce art, but need to draw on the pc needs
a draw program. You know, almost like a CAD but much easier and not bound to
engineering standards.

It's much more basic then a artistic paint application.

The big plus is that you can 1) draw and erase object by object and also
that 2) there are simple ways for meassurments in combination with 3) some
artistic features.

Perfect for Invitations, cards, covers and t-shirt prints, loudspeker and
other DIY drawings etc. Then export to TIFF and add on effects etc in GIMP.

Are there still nothing in the freeware area for this?

Inkscape is an Open Source vector graphics editor, with capabilities
similar to Illustrator, Freehand, CorelDraw, or Xara X using the W3C
standard Scalable Vector Graphics (SVG) file format. Supported SVG
features include shapes, paths, text, markers, clones, alpha blending,
transforms, gradients, patterns, and grouping. Inkscape also supports
Creative Commons meta-data, node editing, layers, complex path
operations, bitmap tracing, text-on-path, flowed text, direct XML
editing, and more. It imports formats such as Postscript, EPS, JPEG,
PNG, and TIFF and exports PNG as well as multiple vector-based formats.

Inkscape's main goal is to create a powerful and convenient drawing tool
fully compliant with XML, SVG, and CSS standards. We also aim to
maintain a thriving user and developer community by using open,
community-oriented development process, and by making sure Inkcape is
easy to learn, to use, and to extend.

I can't remember ever hearing about this software although I have been
interested in vector graphics all along.

But, there it is and it seems great. In my oppinion such programs are almost
as important as an Office package in every SOHO pc.

Thanks!

You're welcome. I hope that eventually, like CorelDraw, one will be able
to create truetype fonts using this program. That is if it's not
possible already. I haven't got the program installed, but I guess maybe
I will do so now.

Did you look at the Draw module of OpenOffice ? There is now the
release candidate version available at
http://download.openoffice.org/2.0.0rc/index.html

I use it every day. I guess it would fit your needs

Thanks Frank, but I don't like Java and in order to use OO.o 2 properly,
one should install JRE. Of course, I suppose I could simply disable Java
in both IE and Firefox... on the other hand, I have a commercial office
suite that I prefer to both MS Office and OO.o.

Last night I installed Inkscape, and it's a really nice little program.
In fact, it's a keeper.
