FP03 Locks Up-Curses Upon FP2003!

S

Smart-Alex

This is driving me to the point of wanting to throw my computer off the
roof! It's like most software...it works great as long as you don't actually
USE it for anything!..or like computers...they work GREAT until you actually
install software..then it's downhill (thats my soapbox for the day)

Why is FP2003 freezing up!??. The hourglass comes on and STAYS on. I can go
for coffee and come back and it's STILL on. Then I CTRL-ALT-DEL and I close
it. THEN...it won't start at all. I click on the icon and looks like It's
starting and then the hourglass goes off again. I have to re-boot.

It seems to happen when I use it. I mean if I am switching and saving
between several pages and then I choose to SAVE.

I have 512RAM...2600AMD...WIN XP SP2 and lots of HD space.

Somebody save me before I hurt somebody with a flying computer!!

Alex

I have done all these things and it is STILL a problem...in fact it's worse.
What is also very frustrating is that my left shared border (where I keep my
menu) disappears and I'm left with the default (nothing)
I have learned to save the left.htm file in another place as a backup.

What is going on with this thing??? I have run Norton anti-virus, I have a
firewall and I 've run Ad-Aware.

First you need to look at the point when this first occurred.
What were you doing before that. Did you install anything in the past
several days?
Upgrade anything? (SR2)?
Try turning off the firewall, sometimes it does strange things.
Run msconfig and see if there's anything unusual running. You can check the
running processes using the task manager also.
You could also restore your settings to a date that it was working.
Computers are "peculiar beasts" (understated) at times and requires patience
and TLC,
so don't get out the sledgehammer yet.
BTW, I've never had FP curse at me although I've cursed at it a few times.
;)

freezing when i try to save my page. I am working on airqualitystore.net , I
usually work on the site right from my web hosting server, so the files are
all server side. So i turned off all my firewalls and it still does it.

The files you are deleting may be corrupt and FP will recreate them
The *.web are FP stored meta files containing info on your site (rebuilt when you close the site)
The cmdui.prf stores your menu bar preferences (deleting will remove any customizations)

Here are the location of them
Clear your IE temp files using ID Tools Internet Options

In Windows Explorer Find and delete all FP Temp Files
Usually in C:\WINDOWS\Temp and %USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Temp
- in FP 2003 you need to look in the super hidden folder
%USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\FrontPageTempDir

In Windows Explorer Find and delete all hidden *.web files
Usually in %USERPROFILE%\Application Data\Microsoft\Web Server Extensions\Cache

Ok so Im still having the problem, I repaired frontpage, that didnt work so i
reinstalled, I cant find those *.web files anywhere or the one certain file
(cant remember name) i was supposed to delete i could not find. But im not
sure this is the same problem as the guys original post. Mine was freezing
when i would change the style of link bars. but when i would change them back
to linkbars i previously used it would not freeze. But it was very chancey,
like it may save or it may not fully save onto the server

Now my link bars are working correctly, please take a look
www.airqualitystore.net :)
I dont know what was wrong or how i fixed it, but just repeatedly opening
frontpage and trying to save eventually it worked

I think what happened was it was not uploading the themes for the link bars
to the server. Any ideas on how to prevent this from happening lemme know :)
, and good luck to original poster.

too much 'stuff' - page transitions, hover buttons, javascript, absolute positioning - which is messed up, text boxes....i cant digest it all - i can't read half the text on the index page

have you viewed your site on another box or with any other browsers?

I use the KISS method when designing...then I mess it up later :)

Are you commenting on the design or saying that due to the mess of stuff on
there it may be why it was freezing on me? Is that backround bad? I knew the
text was a little difficult but haven't found a good backround, i might just
go with white, lol. Also I did view the site on a different computer 4
actually, and onl on one did everytihing look unaligned and outof order, is
this due to the absolute positioning you were talking about ? thank you also
:) cheers

Sorry...I may have been too critical...I was low on caffeine.

Too much stuff going on in code view for me to sort it all out. Design is not so bad, I would simplify the bg graphic or lighten it...hard to read the site from here. I've never really met a background texture graphic that looks good (imo).

Yes, absolute positioning, unless you* really understand it can be a mess. I don't fully understand it yet, but I can tell when it's not working right. I stick to using tables for layouts, it's easier on my tired old brain. (*...using you in the you-general sense...not you specifically)

Thnx Rob :)
K I realize when it freezes on me when trying to save is when i change the
link bar style... If i change it then try to save it wont work, then freezes.
Ive tried numerous things that others in this thread said to try with a few
exceptions. I dleted any *.tmp files (in my case were in C:\Documents and
Settings\Adminstrator\Local Settings\Temp and also frontpagetempdir) , Ive
reinstalled/repaired frontpage. I can't find a file named CMDUI.PRF to
delete even when using the "search all files and folders" option. I also
cant find these "hidden *.web" files that Tom Pepper spoke of. and im not
using any addins. Any ideas or help to get me to those files i need to
delete? thank you all :)

For FP2003:
The FrontPage temp files are located at
%USERPROFILE%\Local Settings\Temporary Internet Files\FrontPageTempDir

For FP2000, 2002 and 2003:
*.web files are located at
%USERPROFILE%\Application Data\Microsoft\Web Server Extensions\cache

cmdui.prf is located at:
%USERPROFILE%\Application Data\Microsoft\FrontPage\state

Type or paste these paths into the address bar in Windows Explorer.

K, I deleted al the files and then tried to save the site again and it keeps
freezing still :( , is there anything else possibly causing this ? It seems
to freeze on "recieving web updates"
