FP prompt to save background

I'm having a problem with FrontPage repeatedly asking to save the background
image with the page.

All the pages on our site have the same background that is stored in
/images.

The first page calls the actual graphic and all other pages get their
background from the first.

When I edit and save an existing page, FP will pop up a window asking me
what to do about the graphic - overwrite, use existing...

Can someone tell me what's going on?

FrontPage uses relative addresses, such as ../images/pic.gif or
images/pic.gif.
If you use a path such as /images/pic.gif FP will assume the image is
not in the current web, and offer to import it.
Note that if you building in a disc based web on C drive, /images
refers to c:/images, which may not be where the images folder actually
is.

Thanks, Ron. In fact, I have a disk based web. FP isn't offering to import
the graphic. The folder displayed in the dialogue box offering to
save/overwrite, or use existing is correct.

While I'm on the topic of disk based webs, I've been trying unsuccessfully
to install IIS/FP extensions so I can use http://locahost. However, no
matter what I do (which order I do them), my website becomes
non-functional...

Can you help with that?

Stephen

That dialogue IS the offer to import the files. The folder shown is
the folder the files will be saved to, and is usually the last folder
you nominated in this dialogue, however long ago.

S

Stephen Green

OK. So can I transform my web into a locahost web? As I said in my earlier
message, all my efforts so far have failed...

If you have IIS and server extensions installed, use File->Publish to
publish the web to http://localhost
Do not publish to a subweb (which would be my normal advice) since the
problem with root relative links will appear again.

S

Stephen Green

Ron!

I installed IIS and configured server extensions. When I try to publish to
http://localhost I'm told there is no web there - do I want FP to create
one. If I say yes, I'm told that FP couldn't create the web - "unable to
open http://localhost/anmt"
1. The web server may not have the FP SE installed.
2. The web server may be temporarily out of service.
3. If you are connecting...

I assume you know the rest. shall I try publishing via FTP?

Did you configure the extensions for the default web site?

Thomas!

Yes, I did. In fact I just now checked and under All Tasks I clicked "Check
Server Extensions" and the program complete successfully.

Ok, DO NOT use FTP or any other method of accessing the web.

Can you open http://localhost via FP's File Menu | Open Web / Site?

Are you running the FP2000 or FP2002 extensions under Windows XP Pro?

The folder "http://Website" isn't accessible. The folder may be located on
an unavailable volume or protected with a password.

Does your Windows account have a (non-empty) password? This is
required for the FrontPage extensions.

R

Ronx

Open the IIS MMC
Start->Control Panel->Administrative Tools->Internet Information
Services
Open the tree in the left column, and right click Default Web Site
Choose Properties
Open the Directory Security tag, and click the Edit button for
Authentication and access control
Tick the box "Allow anonymous access", the box "Allow IIS to control
password" should be ticked as well.
Click OK
While the property sheet is open go to the Documents tag, and make
sure that YOUR choice of Home page is in the list, if it isn't FP will
change your home page filename to whatever is at the top of the list,
which can lead to problems later.
Click OK
right click Default Web Site, and stop it. Then start it.
Try accessing again from IE.

Ron!

Still no luck.

My system must really be screwed up. Is there any way I can reset the
system to the defaults - without reinstalling windows?

Stephen

Thomas A. Rowe

Uninstall the IIS and/or do a system restore to the time prior to it's install. Re-boot then
re-install IIS, then Windows SP1 and SP2.

Note: If you have installed Windows SP1 and SP2, you should re-install them anytime you add a
component from the Windows CD.

Same with Office Updates.
