FP Extensions not working

C

ChrisB

I have recently upgraded from FP98 to FP2003, now the pages I have with
forms in have stopped working.

I can see (I think) what is happening - FrontPage is adding a reference to
/_derived/nortbots.htm to my local pages which gets published to the live
server

Somehow - I need to tell FP not to treat my local files as a website, but as
files .....

All help gratefully received

Might help, might not...I have had problems after upgrading and adding the
iis lockdown tool with forms. Depending on what is 'not working', i found
that changing the account that accesses the _vti_bin file in IIS to an admin
account fixed 'permisson' errors and republishing the site with FP also fixed
things.

What is not working?

FP is designed to work with webs / sites, not individual files, so you must always open web first
before working any content within your web.

Thanks - I partially understand -

In FP98 I was working on the local instance of the website and then
publishing to the server & all was OK

I am still doing this in FP2003, but working on the local site as "c:\...My
Docs...\mywebsite" & then using publish to transfer to public/server site.
FP is amending the forms to add the references, becuase it thinks it's a
local site

I had created the new local instances by importing from my old system into
"My Web Sites" then editing in FP2003 & publishing.

Can I 'tell' FP to treat the local instance as files and only put in the
extensions/webbots when it publishes ?

thx

No. You need to publish the live/remote site back to a new location on your computer, avoid using
the Import Web function, then you links should be correct.

You should Publish from your online server to your local machine...not Import. Import will only bring down what a browser will see...this maybe part of your problem.

Not sure what you mean by:
<Can I 'tell' FP to treat the local instance as files and only put in the
extensions/webbots when it publishes>

FP needs to treat your web as a web, not separate files/pages.

That reference to nortbots.htm will only be on the server if one or more of
the following apply:
1 The server does not have FrontPage extensions running.

2 You use FTP, or publish using FTP, to move the files to the server

3 You access and save the files on the server with FrontPage as a Disc
based web: that is use a file based URL like g:\path\myweb\filename
instead of http://domainname/path/filename

4 There is a bug involving FP98 and extensions, however this does not apply
to FP2003.

To avoid the above (if any apply) the *web* must be Published to the server
using HTTP.
In the publish destination the web server (remote) address must start with
http:// , and not ftp://

Hi Chris,

Thanks for your post.

According to your description, my understanding on this issue is£ºThere was
a local instance built in FP98 and everything (forms) works fine after
publishing to server. When you open the local FP98 instance directly in
FrontPage 2003 and found the forms not working and some strange files
appearing. If I misunderstood your concern, please feel free to let me know.

Additional to MVPs' suggestion and questions, some other information is
also necessary for us to narrow down the problem. Please allow me to
collect the following information from you. I appreciate your effort.

1- Please try opening the site in FrontPage 2003 and then republish to the
Web Server.

2- What does the exact problem you experience? Do you receive any error
message? If so, please take a screen shot of the error message and send it
to me. It is very important for us to resolve the issue more efficiently.
Thanks for your cooperation and patience.

How to take a screen shot, please follow the steps below:
------------------------------------------------------------------
1) When the screen appears, press the Print Screen key (right of F12 key)
Note: nothing will happen.
2) Open Paint ['start' => 'All Programs' => 'Accessories' => 'Paint'].
3) Click Edit (menu) -> Paste or press Ctrl + V.
4) Click File (menu) -> Save. Save it as a .jpg or .gif file and send it to
me as an attachment.

3- The version of FrontPage Server Extensions installed with your site on
the web server.

4- What form does not work? Is it a search form or using e-mail features?

5- How did you publish the site to the web server before in FrontPage 98?

6- If the site is not too big, please add them into a zip file and send it
to me at < (e-mail address removed) >. I can check this problem in testing
environment on my side.

In the meantime, I would suggest you referring to the following article:

Please update me with the information at your earliest convenience. I look
forward to your process.

Hi All

Thanks for all the suggestions - the core of the problem seems to be that I
created the website in FP98 some time ago and have been publishing happily
to ISP server with FP extensions.

I recently upgraded to FP2003 on a new PC

To continue working on website I imported it from the old PC to My Webs on
new PC - I think this (import not publish) was the mistake. Now FP2003
thinks it a local web and puts the nortbots substitutions in, so when I
publish changes back from my new local web to the server it transfers the
nortbots source code. (its a save results form)

Short term fix was to open the remote web site in FP2003 and re-save the
pages - since FP knows it's a server with FP extensions it treats form
properties appropriately.

Longer term fix seems to start again and publish (not import) web site from
remote server to local machine - will try this
