Formatting individual characters within a text box

I haven't been able to find any way to do this; perhaps
one of you know a way.

I am concatenating literals and variables into a single
string in a text box. I'd like to format (underline,
bold, ???) the variable information.

Ideally, this would work like the HTML <underline> or
<bold> tags to just affect the specific varible.

Any solutions out there?
