Formatting Hard Disk

D

DAVID

I have an older machine that when it is working is just
fine for all my needs. When I bought this machine windows
95 was loaded on it, so I finally updated it to 2000. I
really liked this OP. system because it didn't crash like
95. I also loaded some anti virus software on but, I let
the automatic update expire. My kids like to download
stuff of the internet and now my machine doesn't work any
more. I believe my system is loaded up with spyware and
virus's.What I would like to do is to format the hard
drive and reinstall the OP. system. Since I originally had
windows 95 should I install this first then install 2000
so I again can have a dual boot system because I was
unable to updated my scanning software for my scsii
scanner. I guess what I'm asking is how to format my 9 gig
hard drive and reistall windows 95 and reinstall windows
2000. What kind of problems will I have because I think
windows 95 doesn't support one drive bigger tham 2
gig??????. So once again could someone tell me the
procedure on formatting the hard drive an reintalling the
origanal OP. system then once I get there I can figure out
how to install windows 2000 again. One more question, I
mentioned about about windows 95 not supporting a drive
bigger than 2 gig I'm not really sure if that is true.

I would forget about win95. To clean install you'll want to boot the Windows
2000 setup disks or CD-Rom. The set of four install disks can be created
from your Windows 2000 CD-Rom; change to the \bootdisk directory on the
CD-Rom and execute makeboot.exe (from dos) or makebt32.exe (from 32 bit) and
follow the prompts.

Then *F6* very early and very important (at setup is inspecting your system)
in the setup to prevent drive controller detection, and select S to specify
additional drivers. Then later you'll be prompted to insert the manufacturer
supplied Windows 2000 driver for your scsi controller in drive "A"

If you wait and then S to specify additional drivers, then it may be too
late as Windows 2000 Setup at this point may have already assigned the
resources your drive's controller is wanting to use.

When you get to the point, delete the existing NTFS and or other partitions
found. After you delete the partition(s) abort the install, then again
restart the pc booting the CD-Rom or setup disks to avoid unexpected drive
letter assignments with your new install.
