formatting external HDD

Concerning the file format: I thought V*sta only allowes you to format NTFS.

You may have thought that, but you were wrong (hard to accept, I
know).
Operating systems should be designed to be file-compatible with other OS.

From a users's limited viewpoint, perhaps. From a business person's
point of view, moronic.

I would also recommend using NTFS. You will be covered using up to a
Terabyte.

Was there any preloaded software on the Hard Drive (Back up program Etc)?
Don't know if they do this with Hard Drive's. I remember the first time I
inserted a Sandisk flash drive in
It installed some software for some communications (SKYPE) & a program to
dismount the flash drive.
Maybe you have a setup program running behind some windows & that's why you
cannot dismount it properly.
