Help please, im unable to burn music from my laptop, i have vista basic and
until now ive had no problems. I insert a blank cd and it auto loads, then
it asks to format before continueing, i click yes, it formats then right at
the end it says unable to finish formatting and opens the cd. I then try to
burn onto it and the cd stays blank. Any ideas?

Why are you formatting a CD? The ONLY time you need to do that is when you
want to format a CDRW for packet writing.

When i put in a blank cd for writing files or pictures to it, the auto load
pops up and asks me to write file to cd etc, when i click this option it
tells me the cd needs to be formatted in order to continue. it then trys to
format and fails.
Does this make sense?

Does this happen with EVERY CD?
Have you tried another brand?

Yes, i had some cheap CD-r, but then i bought Sony ones and it still doesnt work? Also in control panal under hardware it says the dvd/rw is working correctly so could it be a software problem?
