Formating new partition

G

Guest

Hi,
My laptop crashed, and I am attempting to reinstall WXP. I deleted the
partition (which was my whole 38MB hard drive), and then made a new partition
(with the whole HD), The install cd said the drive needed to be formatted
before the install could continue, so I hit 'enter". This was an hour ago.
It says "setup is formatting...", but the status bar still reads 0%? Is this
normal, or am I screwed?
Thanks

If youre useing a retail xp cd,install cd,boot to cd,select install
xp,delete the
partition(s),create one, then xp will format and install auto.

Hi,

Does the drive activity light on the front of the tower show any activity? I
wouldn't worry so much about the progress bar if it does. If it does not,
then something has caused the process to halt. I would restart the system
and try again (and I should think that would be 38GB, not MB).

Thanls for the help. I stopped the process, and repartitioned to 8GB. Then
tried to use the "quick NTFS" install, but after Windows was supposedly
loaded, I got a disk read error. I read that the quick method will not fix
bad sectors, so here we are again. I restarted it and 8 hours or so later we
are at 5%.

You may need a new hard drive. This may be the reason your laptop crashed in
the first place.
