format hard drive

I'm trying to remove windonws Xp. I tryed formating my
hard drive to do a clean install. I used the command
prompt and did format got this error message (format
cannont run because the volume is use by another process.
you would need to dismount. but everything i say yes it
gives me a error message. does anyone know how to slove
this isuse in order to format my drive. I cant restart my
computer in MS dos

If you want to do a clean install of XP, there is no need to format first.
Boot from the XP CD and follow the setup prompts. Detailed steps provided in
the Clean install link below.
If you want to format for another reason, see the Format link.
You boot from the CD and do a clean install.

You can start your computer in MSDOS with a Boot diskette.
(www.bootdisk.com)

Or better yet - boot with your Windows XP CD, pretend you are setting up
Windows XP... When it gets to the part where it asks "Which partition would
you like to install on?" -- DELETE all partitions, you should then have a
situation similar to a brand new - no OS - hard disk drive.
