forgotten Password

I have a standalone Dell 8400 with XP MC and I am the only user. I
carelessly entered something for the initial login password when I set myself
up as the only user on the first opening screen after bootup. Is there a
way to find that password (there are no "****" showing. I cannot get into
anything but the F2 and F12 screens on initial power on. I need help -- I
have been told there is nothing I can do but loose all of my saved
informattion and files and "re-load" the original XP MC operating system and
then load all the applicatins. Is this really true or is there some "magic"
software to unlock that password???
