For PPPoE do ISPs bind MAC addresses of client

J

Jay

I am using PPPeE to connect to ISP. If I connect my PC's NIC directly
to the ISPs network, it authenticates fine and all works well. If
however, I configure my router to use PPPoE and connect the ISP's
network cable to the WAN port of my router, i have authentication
problem.

THis makes me wonder, if the ISP has restirected access to the MAC
address of my PC?

A call to your ISP should answer that question.

Check your router's documentation to see if it has the ability to
clone the MAC address of a computer. Doing that would make the router
look like your computer to your ISP.

Hi
I did not came across an ISP (Northeast Coast) that adds MAC to the PPPOE
authentication.
Howvever it takes 2 minutes to clone the MAC, so give it a try.
I did come across Routers that had to be replaced because they could not
provide the PPPOE logon correctly.
Make sure that the software PPPOE provided by some ISPs is not running too.

Possibly, but I suggest you turn off all the equipment, then power the DSL
modem on (wait for it to boot), then your router (wait for it to boot) and
then check again.

Hi

I did not come across ISPs (in the Northeast coast) that use both PPPOE and
MAC.

I did come across Routers that did not do well the PPPOE logon.

In any case, it takes 2 minutes to clone the MAC give it a try.

Also, make sure that if you have PPPOE software it is not running while you
are trying the Router PPPOE capacity.
