Footnotes in MS word 07

I'm about to start working on a dissertation which will have footnotes.
However, I don't want superscript numbers in the text that key to the notes.
Rather, I want to have line numbers on the margins of the text pages, and
then footnotes that simply begin by citing the line number. I see how to
insert line numbers, but I can't figure out how to create a footnote without
a superscript number. How can I do this?

That's a great question for a Word-related newsgroup. This one is
about the Microsoft Access database product.
