How did you add the text? By typing? Or by pasting from another document?

Depending on what was included when you pasted, this could affect the footer
(or header). For example, this may occur if you paste in a section break,
which adds section formatting (headers, footers, page setup, and columns).
It will be safer to paste as "Unformatted Text," whenever possible.

If the horizontal alignment of the footer changed, just change it back.

However, if the vertical alignment changed, display nonprinting marks, for
example by pressing Ctrl+Shift+8, to see if any excessive paragraph marks
(¶) have been added to the footer. Also, you should verify the
section-specific settings, especially those for margins and headers and
footers in the Page Setup dialog box.

For more, see http://word.mvps.org/faqs/formatting/WorkWithSections.htm.
