Footer Menu Not Showing "Insert Autotext"

I want to put the path and filename in the footer of documents but suddenly
"insert autotext" is grey and I don't have the option of using it.

The simplest solution is to open the header - Type CTRL+F9, then between the
{} brackets type Filename \p. Press F9 to update and toggle the display,
select the field then ALT+F3 and save with the name Filename and path.
Confirm replacement of the original if prompted.

What has probably happened is that the entry is no longer associated with
the paragraph style used in your header. If the entry is missing altogether
from the autotext list (insert > autotext) then the usual causes is saving a
document as normal.dot.

If I get a copy of the Normal.dot and save it to the appropriate directory
will that resolve the problem?

I followed the steps for opening word to create a new template and can see
the option to insert autotext in the footer, but every time I exit and go
back into it I don't have the insert autotext option in the footer.

You have renamed Normal.dot and let Word create a new one?

Yes and I think I finally got it to work. Problem was finding where the
normal.dot it uses was located.
