Foolishly ran a register cleaner

T

TMCVIII

Now I'm having problems. For one, I can't install the Windows update
"Security Update for SQL Server 2005 Service Pack 3 (KB970892).

I Googled the error message but my machine doesn't have any SQL
servers inactive.

I'm one-cut above neophyte.

I've tried to use System Restore, but my machine won't allow me to do
that.

Shall I reinstall Windows XP Home Edition on top of what I have to fix
the registry?

Your thoughts are appreciated.

Did the wonderful registry cleaner software that you used make a backup
before it destroyed your registry? If so restore it.

Now you know why they are not recommended.

What registry cleaner did you use? Some of them will let you undo what
they did. If you're lucky, you may be able to do that.

I believe it asked me if I wanted to back up the registry and I'm sure
I said no. When I went to look, there wasn't anything in the backup
file.

So, should I reinstall WindowsXP Home Edition on top of what I have?
Will that restore the registry?

Thanks for the help,

Tom

You can try a repair assuming you have a full winxp cd & not a restore cd
You might want to ensure all data is backed up to external before you start

That will probably create a new registry, and you might have to reinstall all
programs as well.

NEVER clean your registry without making a backup first.

It will not create a new registry, an in-place upgrade (repair install)
will refresh the registry and restores default registry values. An
in-place upgrade will *not* change third-party registry entries, the
programs should mostly survive the repair install without needing to be
reinstalled but there is no saying or knowing what the useless registry
cleaner removed so the OP may need to reinstall some of his applications.

NEVER clean your registry without making a backup first.

NEVER use these useless registry cleaners and allow them to
indiscriminately clean your registry, these cleaners are next to utterly
useless and for most part they cause more harm than good.

Thanks to everyone for your responses. I WILL NEVER RUN A REGISTRY
CLEANER AGAIN, EVER!!

Now, to the next issue...

After booting my computer, I dropped my WindowsXP disk into the drive
and got a messsage that said something like, "Your existing version is
newer than the version on the disk..." (I'm paraphrasing). The XP
disk includes SP2, I have installed SP3. I presume that's what the
message means.

I tells me to reboot by computer using the boot disk. My question,
"Can I run a repair installation from the boot disk?"

I don't want to do anymore damage than I already have.

Thanks in advance,

Tom

Create a new CD based off the one you have with SP3 integrated.

You can do an Internet Search for more details. Some keywords that might
help you discover the step-by-step instructions (or a tool to do it for you)
would include:

"Windows XP", slipstream, integrate, "service pack", autostreamer, nLite

Don't try to launch the installation from the up and booted Windows
installation, instead you can boot the computer with the Windows XP cd
and reinstall the operating system. You will have to reinstall SP3 and
other hotfixes after you repair the operating system.

But... the preferred method would be to slipstream SP3 into your Windows
XP CD, it will yield better results.

Do you have any antiviral programs running? I know Symantec/Norton A/V's can stop you from doing a system restore without going through some steps.

I suspect you have bigger fish to fry than anything a registry cleaner
may have done. Which one did you use? Just curious, no big deal.

Yes, it's probably fastest and easiest to backup your personal data and
reinstall XP. If you had a good backup strategy in place, that'd be all
you needed to recover from this. Perhaps you should make it a priority
once you're back up and running.

A couple inline comments for you:

If you aren't using an SQL Server per the KB, then of course the update
won't install since there's nothing to set to "inactive". Here are a
couple links that might help explain some things for you:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/970892
and
http://social.msdn.microsoft.com/Forums/en-US/sqlexpress/thread/bad23a21-2009-46ad-b4d8-1c4fcd796050
You might have to copy/paste that last link if it line wrapped on you
incorrectly.

As for having "foolishly ... ", think nothing of it. In truth you're
simply on a learning curve and occasions like this are great excuses for
learning if you wish to accept the challenge. This one might be a
little drastic to learn from, but in the future ... . Everyone has to
go through something like it, so you're doing fine if this is the worst
that's happened to you so far said:

That sort of sounds like you may have been infected by a virus, trojan,
worm, some kind of malware or even just plain old file corruption; many
of the malwares will kill off your restore points and even some
legitimate programs will do that too, especially third party backup
programs.
Shall I reinstall Windows XP Home Edition on top of what I have to fix
the registry?

That's probably your fastest route to get back up and running.
-- Have you run chkdsk on your C boot drive?
-- How about the Event Viewer? Often you'll find hints there about what
might be wrong.
-- A firewall, Antivirus and antispyware programs are a necessity to
remain reasonably protected; I assume you are running those and have
checked for malware with them?
