I wanted to get some feq files for the foobar2000 equalizer,

I have tried foobar2000 (latest version) and discovered that memory
footprint on my P4/512/AMD2800 is 16Mb, and all that while playing one
lousy song, encoded in 128kbs.

WinAmp 5.07 takes approximately up to 9,5MB

As for the equalizer issue, I thing WinAMp beats them all. Give it a
spin

WinAmp certainly has the best interface IMHO. I can't even tell where the
volume control for foobar2000 is!

Mind you, some people really prefer foobar2000 because of the superior
audio decoding (with respect to audio quality, sample freq). And some
people report impressive performance/low overhead, at least here is one
comment I found at http://www.cleansoftware.org/multimedia/

If you are looking for a simple media player, with small
footprint, this is the player! I can even play Counter-Strike
while listening to my favorite musics! I've compared Windows Media
Player x Foobar2000 relative to resource hogging. Look how impressive
the results are: .... so, in short, WMP uses 9% of processor time and
21MB of memory against Foobar2000 that uses 0.03% of processor time
and 2.5MB of memory in my comparison test (7 ogg musics, 30min
total)!

Mind you, that's comparing to Windows Media Player, not WinAmp (which I
suspect is just as efficient). When WinAmp is playing my 64 kbps ogg vorbis
files it uses 0% CPU and 2 MB of RAM. I really love WinAmp.
