Folks Cant Open PDF Files

J

JCO

I'm having problems with PDF files. I can open them just fine but other
users cannot. I created the PDF files with Acrobat reader 6.0. It requires
the reader to be 5.0 or newer to open the files. This is clearly stated on
the website.

Just wondering if there is something special to get these downloads to work.
They do take a long time to open too.

Any ideas?

How large are the files?
Are the users using dial-up?

Large files may time-out doing download for dial-up users.

Really not much you can do, as it is not a FP or web issue, as the only thing you are doing is
importing and then linking to the files, correct?

I have heard of Adobe having a problem where the first PDF file viewed opens fine but probs appear in any consequent files...I have found that telling people to right click over the link and choose 'Open in New Window' seems to work far more often than going directly to the link

Hope that helps

Most are between 10 and 70 kb. However I do have a document that is 166 and
one that is 341.
The specific one in questions (latest complaint) is 69kb.
I don't know if they were on dial up. I will ask. That obviously will
impact.

You are correct... my files were imported, therefore they are on the server.
I created a link to therefore download.

J

JCO

Maybe I can set them to be in a new window by default.
Thanks for that tip.

Can you provide a URL to 69kb which is very small, I think more in the range of 5 to 8 MBs.

For the cheaper hosting packages (i.e., free), you won't get the auto
"refreshing" that occurs with a "real" hosting package. I have this problem
but am happy to put up with it for now. It otherwise works fine (it's
included with my wideband service - I get 7 accounts which translates to 7
sites), so I cannot complain. My ISP explained that while on the site, I can
do as Michelle mentioned ... open the pdf in a new window then refresh.
However, if you do it ... it will work fine for your visitors. That's what
I do. My site only caters to a small group so it's not an issue. Now that
I know this, I simply do the refresh (myself) from my computer after
publishing, so that my site visitors don't have to worry about whether they
are seeing the most current info or not as they are looking at schedules and
it needs to be curent (it's constantly changing). I hope this is useful.

I ensured that they all open on a separate window already. I have two or
three that were not.
The issue seems to be the first PDF that is opened, regardless of which one
is opened.
I believe Acrobat has to load a lot of drivers, which gets done the first
time it is used. After that, they all open faster.

Thanks for you input.

Actually, refreshing your browser has nothing to do with refreshing the

Once your content is published it's on the server.
Refreshing your browser simply "refreshes" the pages you've visited that are

You can accomplish the same thing by right clicking the IE icon on your

When you say they can't open them...

Who is "they?" All visitors? One visitor?

If it's one visitor, see if their reader is trying to update itself. About
once a month, whether you want it to or not, Reader phones home to check for
updates. While it displays a dialog telling the user what it's doing, I've
found that if it happens when I'm trying to access a web-based PDF, the
message appears _behind_ the browser window. This results in the appearance
of the browser and reader hanging.

Tell the user to launch the reader program all by itself and see if the get
an update confirmation. If they do, have them "OK" it and then close the
reader. Then have them view your page and see if that clears things up.

J

Jack Brewster

I was able to open the first couple on the page without a problem. I did,
however, get a message saying:
"This file may contain newer information than this viewer can support. It
may not open or display correctly. Adobe recommends that you upgrade to the
latest version of our Acrobat products. Please visit our product site at
http://www.adobe.com/acrobat."

What version of the Acrobat Reader (if any) do you have installed? I've got
Acrobat Reader 5.1 and Acrobat 5.05 installed. I tried the v.6 Reader but
found it to be slow and I didn't care for the ad button on the toolbar.

I know you said that you saved the files in v.5 friendly format, but there
must be _something_ that's getting saved that might not be compatible,
otherwise I wouldn't have gotten the message. The documents did appear to
open correctly in the browser, though.

J

JCO

I guess the one's I saved were safe for 5.0. Now that you mentioned that,
some PDF's already existed and may require a higher version. I also put
6.01 on the site for those who want it... to download and install it.

I have the full version 6.0 used to create the PDF's. I picked the save as
feature for 5.0, thinking it would be the most likely version to be
installed. I may need to test them all out and try to save again.

Thanks for you help.

A few of them I could open with 4, I couldn't open any with 5.0.
I'm on VDSL, the ones that I could open did so right away.
I may dl the 6.01 and see what happens.

I'm very surprised that you could not open any with 5.0. That does not make
sense.
The ones that opened with 4, should be able to open with 5 too.

This is sounding worse now. I'm sure you will be able to open all with 6.0.

FYI: Adobe doesn't permit you to provide the Adobe Reader directly from your internet web site, you
must provide a link for your site visitors to download the Reader directly from Adobe.com:

http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/distribute.html?readstep

This allows your site visitors to get the latest version for their OS and platform.

Actually Steve, they wouldn't refresh for me. I had to open in a new
window, then refresh ... that was the only way. My ISP explained that, that
was what I have to do, then after I refresh it, others will see the latest
.... and strangely enough, that is what has been happening. Until "I" did
the refresh, others had to do a refresh. I know it's strange ... and that
it makes no sense, but that's what it's doing.

You must have a strange ISP. Refreshing your personal browser has no
bearing on my browser or anyone elses. ;-)
