folders list always on left side of desktop

The folders list for My Documents is always showing on the
left-hand side of the desktop. When I try to open Windows
Explorer, nothing happens, but I can click on one of the
shortcuts (i.e. My Documents) and Windows Explorer will
open (without the Folders List showing).

Also, I can't seem to share any of my documents (although
they are listed as shared) over my home network - when I
try to open one, it says that the file is in use by
another program (when nothing appears to be using it), and
I must close that program to use the file on the second
computer.

Could they be related? Please help! We need to get some
work done!
