Folder Sorting on name seems really strange.

I recently got this XP computer after my Windows 98 died and the detail view
of Folders confuse me.

I have many filenames in the form ( number dash any character dash any
character dot extent).

What seems to be happening is that files are being listed as though there
are leading blank zeros in the file name such as:

2-lzp-mt.jpg
10-vien-mt.jpg
95-vien-mt.jpg
226-bug-mt.jpg
442-bud-mt.jpg
1000-ber-mt.jpg

With a large folder I am having troubles finding files from the list. There
doesn't seem to be any XP help on sorting files and they never did this in
Windows98. How can I fix the display without changing all of my file names.

XP has a new "intuitive" sorting algorithm, so that files named like this:

file 1.txt
file 05.txt
file 20.txt

will list in the above order, because to you and me, 1 comes before 5, but
to a computer, 0 comes before 1.

You can revert this to the old way if you want: get the TweakUI powertoy,
version 1.2 (the latest) from microsoft's site (it's free), there's an
option in there to change it back to the old way. That'll sort these like
this:

File 05.txt
File 1.txt
File 20.txt

TweakUI has about 100 things you can tweak, everyone should have it!
