Folder Redirection and Renaming Server

J

Jon

Previously a GPO had been configured to redirect
users "My Documents" folders to a network location. This
option requires specifying the full UNC path to the
server which is to store the data (\\(servername)
\(sharename)). As of this past weekend the server which
was being used to store the user data was renamed and the
UNC name specified in the GPO had been updated to reflect
the new server name.
Problem:
The problem seems to be that the GPO is not updating the
clients to reflect the new server name causing errors.
Another thing worth mentioning may be that the majority
of client PC's are using Windows XP Pro.
Any ideas?

Hi Jon,

What are the errors you are getting on the Windows XP machines?

If you find that the My Documents path gets corrected after a second logon
you might want to make sure Fast Logon Optimization is disabled on the
Windows XP machines.

Thanks for the information Dave, but the My Documents
path does not get corrected.

A couple things that I forgot to mention are: 1) We also
have offline folder synchronization set via GP. This is
where the errors are occurring. They are not updating
when the server rename was done. The machines are saying
that cannot find
\\newservername\sharename\username\mydocs folder which
comes up when the user logs off or logs on.

2) When I look at the redirected My Documents it does not
give the new server name, even after I update the GPO.
This is problematic because I can't get to the redirected
My Documents.

I hope this helps to clarify this issue a little more.

Hi Jon,

1. logon as the user and verify they can connect to
\\newservername\sharename

2. Install the Windows Server 2003 Resource Kit on a test Windows XP
machine and run the following command:
Reskit Download:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...69-57ff-4ae7-96ee-b18c4790cffd&DisplayLang=en

csccmd.exe /moveshare:\\oldservername\sharename \\newservername\sharename.

Log off and back on and see if the path gets changed to the new server on My
Documents. See if the policy applied successfully or not.

3. If you have a spare member server try renaming it to the old server name
and make a share that matches the old share name. See if users logon, sync
their data to the old share and then get the policy applied with
\\newservername\sharename on My Documents now. If they do, logoff and
verify the My Documents syncs to the new location at logoff.

What is the Event ID: #, Source: and word-for-word Description from the
event (minus server and user names)?

Are the Administratively assigned offline files redirected to the new server
now?
