Folder Options will not maintain "View" settings

I recently reloaded my WinXP Pro/sp2. Ever since it seems my view settings
under folder options will not retain the settings. I am using "Use Classic
Windows", that works however it seems other views will not stay selected for
long. Something keeps changing them back. For instance I have several
folders on my desktop, some I have set for "Icon" view and others I have set
for "Thumbnail" view. I can set them fine, and they initially appear to
hold, but after a little bit if I click on the folders again they have
changed back to "Detail" view. I find this problem occurs with other
folders as well like Control Panel. Under Folder Options | View I have it
set to "Remember each folder's view settings"

I simply cannot figure out what is changing these settings back.

Any ideas on what to look for?

This can be a resources issue. But make sure you are not inadvertantly
checking "Same View in all Folders." But yes this can happen when resources
go low. I set my Control Panel icons and for some reason it doesn't stick
for long it will return to Details periodically. It's just a resources
issue.

This should do the job for you: Windows Explorer/Tools/Folder Options.
Then place check marks where applicable. Then click "Apply to all Folders".
This is the only method that will work for me. Dick

Way to MAKE FOLDERS HOLD VIEW SETTINGS:

There are two keys in the Registry that retain view settings
Hkey_Current_User\Software\Microsoft\Windows\ShellNoRoam

BagMRU
Bags
The process to retain setting is.
Delete those two keys in the registry
Reset "All folders" to your specific views.
Then Export those two registry keys.
If and when Windows resets the folder views, import the two
registry text files back into the Registry. This will restore the views.

You can also do the same for the key that is above the "\ShellNoRoam called
"...\Shell"
delete the same BagMRU & Bags under that key also. Some say this action is
not necessary, but if the other doesn't 'hold', you might try that. Just be
sure and always export your registry keys to some location, say in My
Documents\Registry Modifications Folder (that you set up)

Thanks Allen I'll give that a try. One thing I'm not sure of is that if
windows keeps resetting my defalut settings I'll be spending too much time
reimporting my settings back. It's not like my problem occurs once a day.
It happens very often. I can make setting changes to a folder and for an
hour they stick and then wham back to detail view. And not only does the
view change but the Open folder size changes(not maximized by default) as
well as the icon order in that folder. Let's hope your suggestion works.
I certainly hope it's not a Resource issue.

Oh it is. It is true in all versions of Windows. That is why there are
"fixes" for it. I would not investigate it further and I definitely would
not import reg settings periodically often. That can lead to trouble. Just
set all folders to the view you want and for those folders you want
different periodically reset them through View in Windows Explorer when they
return to what you had set for all folders. It's just a fact of life.
