folder mirroring program?

I'm looking for a program that will mirror selected folders to a backup hard
drive. I've seen several but I'm looking for one that monitors disk
writes/deletes and mirrors the changes to the mirror drive without user
intervention. All of the ones I've seen so far would require scanning of
the source and destination drives, a time-consuming operation.

Configurability is important - ability to exclude/include folders/files
especially.

any such beast in the freeware world?

I have been using XXCOPY but of course I have to start that manually, and I
usually don't bother to run it until I've shut everything down so that I
won't have a lot of locked files that won't get copied over.

I've never seen the program you describe (the function is available in
a Windows API), but some programs can accomplish the result you want
without being run manually. I use Karen's Replicator for the same
purpose.
