Folder is read only

Hi all!
I think I am doing everything correctly to give access to users to their
"home" directory on a Windows 2000 server machine. This server was not setup
by me but I administer it. There is a drive that the staff at this school
accesses through a batch file with the net use command. That part works
fine. I recently created folders for the teachers on this "S" drive so they
can save data to their folder. I gave them all permissions to their folder
and when they try to save to it they get the message that the folder is read
only and obviously they aren't able to save their files. When I look at the
folder on the server it does NOT have the read only attribute checked. A few
months ago I created a folder on the server for a staff member and I am able
to log onto a workstation with her user ID and save to her folder. I have
looked at the permissions I setup for her and they "seem" to be the same for
everybody else. I did notice that the server had recently updated and it
required an automatic reboot of the server. Could this be the problem? Was
there a glitch in this update that I am not aware of? Any help would be
greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Just to be clear, the users or the group the users belong to have
read/write/modify NTFS permissions. The Share permissions are at least
Everyone - Read and Write. The folders file attributes is not "read only".
There are no other groups the these users are members of that have a "deny"
box checked.

Normally with a permissions problem you'd get an "access denied" or
"permissions" error, not a read-only error. Have you tried unchecking the
"inherit permissions from parent" box, clearing the ACLs and re-doing
permissions from scratch?

Correct. The users have read, write, modify permissions for their folders.
There aren't any "deny" permissions anywhere on the server. I am perplexed
by this lack of permission as I have granted them "administrator" rights to
their folder. They don't get the "access denied" message. It is the "folder
is read only" message. I have administered this server for over a year and
have been working with computers for a numbers of years and wonder what the
heck is going on. Do you think rebooting the server would serve any purpose?
Open to any suggestions. Thanks.

Rebooting solves a multitude of problems. I chased a DNS forwarding problem
around for days. I finally rebooted the da@# box and everything worked just
fine again. There are plenty of other times the same has happened. After
rebooting, you might try creating a new folder in a different path and share
it with the same name. As I said, you can totally wipe out the permissions
and rebuild. Can an administrator create and modify files in the "bad"
folder? What about if you create new user? Just some things to try.

At risk of labouring the point, you keep mentioning the permissions on
the folders, but have you checked the permissions on the shares?

Thanks for the help. I haven't been back at the school since I posted. I
will try a reboot and keep my fingers crossed.
